Hello, I'm Som!

I am a math tutor with 16 years of experience helping students succeed. I began tutoring as a student in Stuyvesant High School. I continued my education to earn a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education in Mathematics at Queens College, becoming a licensed math teacher thereafter. I soon realized that my passion lies in the student-centered approach that is afforded to tutoring, and I returned to this career in 2021. I work in all math subjects up to and including calculus. I have worked with hundreds of students over the years. I hope to bring my expertise and compassionate approach to you as well!

Some of the various experiences I have had as an educator in New York City include: small-group tutor for students with IEPs; algebra and geometry high school teacher; tutor of math and science to college students aging out of foster care; lead math teacher at tutoring centers. Throughout all of these experiences, my goal has been to empower students through a specially-tailored approach that centers their whole selves- their interests, goals, abilities and preferences. I utilize a variety of approaches, including tactile tools, visualization, building procedural skills, discourse, and problem solving.

I am proud to have built bridges for students who were failing, to pass and excel. I am proud to have helped students be accepted to the best schools and universities. I am proud to have helped anxious students change their mindset around math and unlock their full potential. I guarantee that students will see a marked improvement in their grades or other desired outcomes. I believe that all students are capable of building math knowledge, as it is a representation of the world that we exist in.
