Bio

Would you like to learn Spanish or Quichua? I mean, really like to learn?

Sure, learning Spanish or Quichua is quite an undertaking. Right off the bat, I could give you five reasons not to learn either language:

1. You're too busy.
2. You're too old.
3. You don't have a 'gift' for languages.
4. You get bored in class.
5. You don't have the time to take a college course.

And, right off the bat, I can tell you that you can learn these languages because:

Would you like to learn Spanish or Quichua? I mean, really like to learn?

Sure, learning Spanish or Quichua is quite an undertaking. Right off the bat, I could give you five reasons not to learn either language:

1. You're too busy.
2. You're too old.
3. You don't have a 'gift' for languages.
4. You get bored in class.
5. You don't have the time to take a college course.

And, right off the bat, I can tell you that you can learn these languages because:

1. No one is so busy that they can't scrape together 15 minutes of practice a day. If you can't do all 15 minutes at one time, divide it into 5 minutes in the morning, five right before lunch, and five at night. I'll give you suggestions on how to do it.

2. No one is ever too old or too young to learn. I've had students ranging from eight years old to seventy-two years old!

3. You don't need a gift for languages to learn and use the basics. Did you need a 'gift' for languages to learn your native one? Nope! So, you won't need a 'gift' to learn a new language either!

4. Boredom is a relative term; sometimes it's the way a teacher teaches, sometimes it's the way a student perceives things. But, I'll do my best to make sure that you aren't bored. And, if you do find yourself bored, just let me know, and together, we'll do something about it.

5. Unless you want to become a language service professional, you probably don't need to take a college course in Spanish or Quichua in order to speak it. My focus as a teacher is on you speaking the language, and understanding the basics of its grammar.

I've been a Spanish/Quichua language teacher for almost 24 years, both as a volunteer in South America and as a professional. Classes can be conducted either with individuals or with groups of up to 10 students. Most of the year my classes are conducted online. However, if yours is a special case, let me know and we can talk about in-person classes. My curriculum and methods are based on what my students needs, so if you have certain requirements for specific subjects, let me know.

And, I never yell.

I'll never forget the first time that I placed within the top five spellers of my class; I cried with astonishment that I had placed so high! Spelling is, unfortunately, a neglected part of learning. Wonderful & Patient Teacher

Writing this review because after the first lesson, I already feel at ease in learning Spanish. She is helping me understand the cultural nuances in translation and is very encouraging. I am beyond excited to be working with Julie - thank you!!

Effective and Patient Teacher

Julie is wonderful! She is invested in my interests as a student as well as my learning style, and is excellent at analyzing my strengths and weaknesses and adjusting our lessons accordingly. She is patient -- I always feel I can ask questions -- but always corrects my grammar and pronunciation and keeps me on my toes. I've taken Spanish lessons online before, and this was the first time I felt I made genuine progress, quickly, because it was so personalized and Julie communicated so well. Would definitely recommend her!

Creative and very flexible.

Julie quickly creates new ways to adapt to your learning style and to your needs. This makes for equally productive and challenging lessons! The homework that is assigned really makes me excited about what we'll do next time.
