About Julie

Would you like to learn Spanish or Quichua? I mean, really like to learn?

Sure, learning Spanish or Quichua is quite an undertaking. Right off the bat, I could give you five reasons not to learn either language:

1. You're too busy.
2. You're too old.
3. You don't have a 'gift' for languages.
4. You get bored in class.
5. You don't have the time to take a college course.

And, right off the bat, I can tell you that you can learn these languages because:

1. No one is so busy that they can't scrape together 15 minutes of practice a day. If you can't do all 15 minutes at one time, divide it into 5 minutes in the morning, five right before lunch, and five at night. I'll give you suggestions on how to do it.

2. No one is ever too old or too young to learn. I've had students ranging from eight years old to seventy-two years old!

3. You don't need a gift for languages to learn and use the basics. Did you need a 'gift' for languages to learn your native one? Nope! So, you won't need a 'gift' to learn a new language either!

4. Boredom is a relative term; sometimes it's the way a teacher teaches, sometimes it's the way a student perceives things. But, I'll do my best to make sure that you aren't bored. And, if you do find yourself bored, just let me know, and together, we'll do something about it.

5. Unless you want to become a language service professional, you probably don't need to take a college course in Spanish or Quichua in order to speak it. My focus as a teacher is on you speaking the language, and understanding the basics of its grammar.

I've been a Spanish/Quichua language teacher for almost 24 years, both as a volunteer in South America and as a professional. Classes can be conducted either with individuals or with groups of up to 10 students. Most of the year my classes are conducted online. However, if yours is a special case, let me know and we can talk about in-person classes. My curriculum and methods are based on what my students needs, so if you have certain requirements for specific subjects, let me know.

And, I never yell.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

So, why would a person need tutoring in English? Here are some quotes to explain why:

“English is a funny language; that explains why we park our car on the driveway and drive our car on the parkway.”

Author Unknown

“Why do we have noses that run and feet that smell?”

Author Unknown

"It's a strange world of language in which skating on thin ice can get you into hot water." ~Franklin P. Jones

So, together let's learn more about this mysterious language we call "English".

Grammar

Take this short quiz:

1) What's the difference between YOUR and YOU'RE?

2) Does the heat AFFECT you or does it EFFECT you?

3) Write out an example of a dangling participle.

4) Will the upcoming celebration of the jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II be a HISTORIC or a HISTORICAL event?

5) Should I have written A HISTORIC or AN HISTORIC?

You'll know if you need my services by the end of the quiz!

Proofreading

Have you ever been startled by a printing error in a supermarket circular, or on a website? Why did it happen? Because the writer, the printer or the one in charge of the text didn't use a proofreader. Please contact me if you would like your text proofread, and save yourself some embarrassment!

Reading

My mom taught me to read when I was four years old. Ever since then, I've loved books, and I loved to not only help people to read books, but also to help them build an appreciation for them. Let me know what your needs are, and I'll do my best to work with you to better your reading comprehension.

Spanish

If you need tutoring in Spanish, I'm ready to help you. For the last 19 years I've taught Spanish and Quichua to students of all ages, to individuals and to groups of up to 10 students. I tailor my curriculum to the student, so that he/she can measure the progress made, and the goals ahead. And, I never yell. :-)

Spelling

I'll never forget the first time that I placed within the top five spellers of my class; I cried with astonishment that I had placed so high! Spelling is, unfortunately, a neglected part of learning. But, if we work at it together, I'm sure that you'll start to see a difference, not only in your actual spelling, but also in your own attitude towards it.

Vocabulary

The writer Evelyn Waugh said, "One forgets words as one forgets names. One's vocabulary needs constant fertilizing or it will die." So, let's do some 'gardening'!
