I am a 2012 graduate of the TESLA certificate program at the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City. TESLA is Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults. Even before entering the program, I was tutoring and leading an ESL conversation group at a public library.
Working one-on-one has many benefits for you. It means activities and homework that help YOU learn. I take the time to find out what you need to learn and how you learn best. As a tutor, I have a big heart and a great sense of humor: important ingredients in learning. You will not have to worry about making mistakes, because I understand that how important they are in learning English. If you are adjusting to life in the U.S., we will also talk about American culture; culture and language are closely related.
My experience is that students who are already skilled in English benefit the most from my style of tutoring. However, I have also had success with students who are less skilled.
Please email me and tell me about your needs, interests, and goals in English! Are you learning English as an adult? Besides being an incredible tutor, Bonnie is also an incredible human being.
I started having classes with Bonnie last November, and I can say that she has been helping me a lot to gain confidence in speaking and to refine my grammar.
She is very careful about her student and always tries to bring interesting articles, exercises, and topics for conversation to class. Having class with her is pleasure and I am always looking forward to next one!
Bonnie is a responsible tutor who always tries to be ahead the next lesson. She's very flexible in terms of content and schedule and is ready to work on what her students need. I recommend her for beginners but also for students who need to polish specific grammar and pronunciation issues, like me.
Bonnie tutored my mom, Iris, whose first language is Spanish. She said the following:
Bonnie is a really good listener and she worked with me on my pronunciation because I have a hard time with past tense endings. She gave me activities that fit my level and we worked on my reading comprehension regarding different verb tenses.
Bonnie is very patient during our lessons and flexible in terms of meeting up with me. I would not hesitate to use her again in the future!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored adults in English as a Second Language since 2009. By 2012, I completed the 15-month TESLA (Teaching English as a Second Language) program at New York City's Literacy Assistance Center in 2012. Between 2009 and 2011, I led ESL conversation groups at two Brooklyn libraries and worked as conversation partner at a Queens library.
I have dedicated hundreds of hours to professional ESL tutoring since early 2010.
Ever since I was in high school I have demonstrated strong ability in proofreading and editing as well as writing. As an adult ESL tutor today, I often assist students with editing (what many people call proofreading). Years ago, I completed a one-semester course in copy editing and proofreading at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
I am passionate about helping students learn to edit their own work. Because I am a teacher rather than an editor, strengthening the student's ability to edit and supporting his or her awareness of effective writing are my goals. I don't take over the student's assignment as an expedient.
My experience in helping many students with writing, based on my own writing ability and my teaching talent, is my main qualification for tutoring writing.
As an ESOL/writing tutor, I find joy in helping students to write and revise their essays and papers, whether they are advanced English language learners or native speakers, to strengthen their English essays. I work with you in a collaborative way, asking many questions to help you organize and clarify your text.
To understand how I assist you with the stages of your writing process, imagine that you bring me in at the start. I help you to structure the process as follows.
• The first stage is invention, when you decide what to write about and gather ideas and information to support or explain it.
• The second stage is arrangement, when you figure out how to organize your ideas.
• In the third stage, usually over several drafts, you write and revise your essay. You polish your ideas and the mechanics, style, and structure of your writing.
At whatever stage I come in, I question and suggest, partnering with you to strengthen YOUR writing ability rather than writing or editing for you.
