Hi! I'm Julia, and I am a writer, tutor, and nanny currently based in Brooklyn. I hold an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and a BFA in Media Arts Production from Emerson College's School of the Arts, with a minor in Narrative Nonfiction Essay Writing. For the last four years I have taught Video Production and Creative Writing at Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp, a six-week arts intensive for students ages 11-16, and for the last two years I have done Regents tutoring for middle school students here in New York City.
Through my teaching experience, as well as my MFA writing program, I have learned how to provide feedback on students' writing in a way that is encouraging, constructive, and collaborative. Instead of just rambling off a list of things that are "wrong," I find that writing improves most when the feedback is structured through investigative questions: What is the writer trying to say here? What do we want our reader to understand by the end? How can we express it more clearly? This way, the writer feels agency in the way their piece evolves through its drafts. They not only come away with a polished piece, but have also learned how to express themselves in a more clear and compelling way going forward.
In a world in which shortcuts are becoming more and more available to students, it is a passion of mine to instill a love of writing and self-expression in this generation, especially when it comes to college applications. I minored in Narrative Nonfiction Essay Writing at Emerson College, which means I took classes in journalistic and memoir writing, the exact style that most colleges are seeking in personal statements, as well as many supplementary essays. I love working with students and families on whatever methods and resources work best for them. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
