My name is Alaina, and I’m a tutor based in New York. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies and Classics from Hunter College, and I’m currently completing my Master’s in Women’s and Gender Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. My academic background includes extensive work in writing, critical analysis, and subjects like history, literature, and classical studies. I also have several years of teaching and facilitation experience. As an undergraduate teaching assistant at Hunter College, I led weekly discussion sections, helped students engage with complex texts, and supported their writing development. I’ve also designed and facilitated lessons through my work with educational and nonprofit organizations, working with both high school and adult learners.

My approach to tutoring is collaborative and student-centered. I focus on helping you build confidence, strengthen your analytical skills, and develop clear, effective writing. Whether you need help with essays, reading comprehension, or understanding challenging material, I’ll work with you to find strategies that actually make sense for you. I’m happy to work with high school and college students across a range of subjects, especially writing, humanities, and social sciences. I look forward to working with you.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

I have studied American history through a gender and cultural studies lens, with particular attention to how power, race, class, and gender shape historical narratives. My academic work has trained me to read both primary and secondary sources critically, situating events within broader political and social contexts. I am especially attentive to how dominant historical accounts are constructed and whose perspectives are included or excluded. This allows me to engage with American history not just as a sequence of events, but as a contested field of interpretation and memory.
English

English

I have strong expertise in English grounded in my academic training in Gender Studies and Classics, where I developed advanced skills in critical reading, analytical writing, and textual interpretation. My work engages deeply with complex theoretical texts, requiring careful attention to language, argumentation, and rhetorical structure. I have also applied these skills in teaching and facilitation roles, guiding students through challenging readings and helping them develop their own written and verbal communication. Additionally, my publication and professional writing experience demonstrate my ability to communicate effectively across both academic and public-facing contexts.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have a strong foundation in essay writing grounded in my academic training in Gender Studies and Classics, where I consistently produced high-level analytical work and maintained a 3.8–3.9 GPA . My writing has been published in both academic and public-facing venues, demonstrating my ability to adapt my voice, structure, and arguments for different audiences. I have also developed essays for conference presentation, refining complex research into clear, persuasive arguments. In addition, my professional experience writing blog content, grant materials, and educational resources has strengthened my ability to write with clarity, purpose, and flexibility across contexts.
Literature

Literature

I have strong expertise in literature through my academic training in Gender Studies and Classics, where I have engaged extensively with a wide range of literary texts across historical periods and genres. My work involves close reading, theoretical analysis, and situating literature within broader social, political, and cultural contexts. I have also facilitated discussions on complex literary works, helping others interpret themes, language, and critical frameworks. Additionally, my research and writing demonstrate my ability to synthesize literary analysis with interdisciplinary theory to produce nuanced, original arguments.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have experience proofreading academic and professional writing across essays, theses, and application materials, with a focus on clarity, structure, and argument precision. In my graduate-level work in Gender Studies, I regularly revise my own writing and engage deeply with grammar, syntax, and stylistic consistency. I am careful in identifying issues at both the sentence and paragraph level, including tone shifts, repetition, and unclear transitions. My approach prioritizes preserving the author’s voice while improving readability and coherence.
Reading

Reading

I have extensive experience with close, analytical reading of academic texts, particularly in literature, gender studies, and cultural theory. My graduate coursework has trained me to engage with complex arguments, identify key themes, and track how meaning is constructed across different forms of writing. I am attentive to rhetorical strategies, historical context, and theoretical frameworks, which allows me to interpret texts at both the surface and structural levels. I also regularly synthesize readings into written analysis, demonstrating a strong ability to translate comprehension into clear critical insight.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I developed extensive experience in thesis writing through the completion of my MA thesis, a full-length, interdisciplinary research project examining the history and ideological evolution of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press. This work required me to construct a sustained, original argument supported by archival research, theoretical analysis, and close engagement with feminist scholarship. I organized the project into multiple chapters, each building toward a central claim about the impact of neoliberal pressures on radical movements. Throughout the process, I refined my ability to synthesize complex sources, maintain a clear argumentative throughline, and revise extensively in response to feedback from my advisor and academic committee.
