Every student is different. I'm here to help you figure out your learning style and how you can wield it to reach your goals without feeling overwhelmed.

I hold a B.A. in Cognitive Science -- the study of how people think and learn -- from UC Berkeley, with coursework in psychology, neuroscience, sociology, linguistics, philosophy, and computer science. I have 2 years of volunteer experience coaching high school and college students through essays, 3 years of experience tutoring peers in AP Biology, SAT Math, and other high school science and math topics, and 4 years of volunteer experience teaching drawing fundamentals and providing art critique. Please see my Approved Subjects for more details.

No matter what I'm tutoring, I like to cut through confusion by focusing on basic understanding, developing personalized learning strategies, and linking concepts to what a student already knows. Research shows that that's the most effective way to learn something new and not forget it.

I am an avid reader of fiction and science nonfiction, and in my free time I enjoy improv acting and writing my own stories.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I love high school biology! It's a great introduction to a wide and important field, but I get that it can be overwhelming. What's nice about biology is that it's very applicable to our daily lives. It's likely that whatever biology topic you're struggling with can be linked to something you already know or have direct experience with, and this is one principle I've followed in my experience tutoring peers in AP Bio. Research has shown that this is the best way to understand new information and truly retain it. Tests and Classes: Honors Biology, AP Biology: A grades, 5 on AP exam Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry: A grades, 5 on AP exam AP Environmental Science: 5 on AP exam Anatomy and Physiology: A grade Competitions: USA Biology Olympiad finalist, top 20 in nation (senior year) USA Biology Olympiad semifinalist (freshman through senior year) Science Olympiad, Anatomy event: top 6 at national and state competitions Science Olympiad, Environmental Science event: top 6 at national competition, 1st in state
Drawing

Drawing

I love comics! I have one completed webcomic under my belt as well as a manga-style one-shot. I understand that every artist has their own vision, and I'm here to help you achieve yours, while providing resources and coaching for improvement in fundamentals like anatomy, color, perspective, panel layout, character design, and background art as needed. I would love to talk about your comics creation process with you! After 4 years of volunteer experience tutoring students in drawing, I believe in a critique process that centers the artist's goals and intentions instead of calling things "good or bad". I am also a classically trained artist experienced in still lifes, life drawing, and plein airs, and I studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Students League of New York.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

High school environmental science is a great introduction to a field that grows in relevancy and importance every day. I get that all the information can be overwhelming. Since we all live in the Earth's environment together, in my 2+ years of tutoring students in environmental science, I focus on linking topics to what students already know or experience in their day to day lives. Research has shown that this is the best way to understand and retain new information. Qualifications: AP Environmental Science: 5 on AP exam Science Olympiad, Environmental Science event: top 6 at national competition, 1st in state
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I am a quick and reliable proofreader (I worked as an English editor for research journals for 2 years) and I have 2 years of volunteer experience coaching high school and college students through academic essays, college application essays, and personal statements. In high school, I achieved A's in and thoroughly enjoyed my AP Language and AP Literature & Composition classes. When it comes to English and essay writing, I believe that critical reading and self-expression are essential skills, not only for school but also for life. Every student brings their own views and perspective to the material they read, and I am here to help you figure out and express yours.
Literature

Literature

Avid reader and very familiar with the high school/college assigned reading curriculum. I would love to read a book together and talk about its themes with you. Ask me about Moby Dick!
Painting

Painting

I am classically trained in acrylic, oil paint, gouache, and pastel, with experience painting still lifes, plein airs, and creating original compositions. I studied figure drawing from live models at the Art Students League of New York. I am a published illustrator and an experienced digital artist with strong skills in Adobe Photoshop and Procreate for iPad. After 4 years of volunteer experience tutoring students in drawing, I believe in a critique process that centers the artist's goals and intentions instead of calling things "good or bad". I would love to learn what you find beautiful, and help you capture and evoke that in your own artwork.

Very patient and knowledgeable!

Jamie was very patient and explained things to me clearly when I had trouble understanding, and didn't mind at all when I needed clarification. They are super resourceful and knowledgeable and was able to break down complicated concepts that I had trouble with in school and give memorable explanations that other tutors weren't able to give. They also showed a sincere interest in helping both me and other students reach goals! I highly recommend Jamie as a tutor and I will be booking another session soon.
