About Sam

Bio

Hi! My name is Sam F. I’m a writing tutor and English educator with a Master’s degree in the Teaching of English. I came to teaching through a love of reading and writing, but just as crucially, through my own experience as a student. The teachers I remember best weren’t just sources of information – they were thoughtful guides who created spaces where I felt comfortable trying, failing, and improving. That experience stuck with me, and it’s a big part of why I do this work now.

Over the past several years, I’ve taught writing and literature across a range of grade levels, from foundational reading and writing skills to advanced analytical essays, as well as creative and interdisciplinary courses like filmmaking, where students develop stories from script to screen.

When I sit down with a student, I try to recreate that same kind of environment: one where writing feels like a process rather than a performance. We break things down together, whether that means building an essay step by step, working through a tricky passage, or revising a draft with a clearer sense of purpose. I focus on close reading, structure, and clarity, but I also want students to feel ownership over their ideas and develop confidence in their own voice. Everyone approaches writing differently, so I tailor sessions to meet students where they are and help them find strategies that actually work for them.

Over time, my goal is not just to improve a single assignment, but to help students feel more confident, independent, and capable with their writing skills in general.
