My name is Ayla K. (she/her). I completed my undergraduate degree at Yale University, graduating with honors in History, and I am currently pursuing an MFA in Filmmaking (writing-directing) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Since graduating college in 2021, I have worked as a writing tutor and essay coach between New York City and Pakistan (references available upon request). I have taught students from 8th through 12th grade, including those attending private schools such as Brearley, Dalton, and Chapin.
I specialize in cross-disciplinary writing across the humanities—particularly History and English—but I also support students with writing across the board. Whether working on analytical essays, personal statements, or humanities coursework, I help students sharpen their critical thinking through extensive brainstorming, incisive questioning, and close, patient reading.
My teaching approach is grounded in cultivating a genuine, grassroots love of learning. I encourage students to develop their own voice by uplifting their personal insights and worldviews, and by helping them meaningfully connect those perspectives to the variety of texts they study. In an increasingly digital age, my practice emphasizes sustained reading and deep engagement as the foundation for strong writing. I believe in a holistic, skill-based approach to writing: one that builds confidence, clarity, and intellectual curiosity in ways that are transferable across disciplines and into students’ futures. For those interested, I look forward to speaking with you and your children about their individual writing needs.
