About Phoebe

Bio

You know how you can picture a horse in your mind, but when you try to draw it, it just looks like a weird giraffe?

"Good" writing isn't about grammar rules. It's not about three-act structure, and it definitely isn't just typing words onto a blank page.

Good writing is drawing the horse that looks like a horse. In other words: my goal is to help you write your stories exactly how YOU want them to be written. My job is not to give you universal rules of creative writing; it's to help...

"Good" writing isn't about grammar rules. It's not about three-act structure, and it definitely isn't just typing words onto a blank page.

Good writing is drawing the horse that looks like a horse. In other words: my goal is to help you write your stories exactly how YOU want them to be written. My job is not to give you universal rules of creative writing; it's to help you find YOUR rules for creative writing.

My teaching experience is diverse, so I am ready to guide you in an instructional setting that meets your needs! I have been tutoring since 2013 (I spent two years leading small groups in SAT test prep tutoring!) and now teach a variety of Creative Writing courses (eg: Short Story, Memoir, Screenwriting).

As a creative writer myself, I am committed to my own continued learning, and my creative education includes: a Bachelor's Degree from Tufts University in Art History, a certificate course in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University, a six-month private intensive with NYT Bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater, and several Fiction courses at Gotham Writers Workshop.

I offer two types of lessons. In a "Project-Based" lesson, we'll focus on your works in progress. Whether it's your college essay or the novel you've been trying to finish for six years, I will give you specific feedback on your work, and we'll spend lesson time revising together. A "Syllabus-Based" format follows units like classes do. Each lesson we'll discuss a different tool or element of writing, and we'll tailor these based on your own specific needs.

I'm excited to meet you!

Creative Writing

As a creative writer myself, I am committed to my own continued learning. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Tufts University, I received a Certificate in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. I am mentored by NYT Bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater and recently completed her six-month "bootcamp."
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

In my tutoring and mentorship experiences, I have read a scope of personal essays for college applications. To complete my own degree in Art History from Tufts University, I wrote dozens of academic essays. My Senior Honors Thesis was an essay of over 100 pages entitled "Torturing the Artist: Celebrity and Trope in Media Representations of the Abstract Expressionists" and received Honors from the thesis committee.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I adore fiction, and have taught it in classrooms through the mediums of Film, Novel, Theatre, and Short Story. My screenplay scripts have been accepted at film festivals world-wide, although I am currently a novel-writer. I received a Certificate in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University, and completed several courses at Gotham Writers Workshop, including Fiction I and Fiction II.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

To complete my own degree in Art History from Tufts University, I wrote dozens of academic essays. I believe that you could argue for any opinion, any interpretation, so long as you can justify it with textual evidence. No matter how odd the thesis statement is. My Senior Honors Thesis at Tufts University was an essay of over 100 pages entitled "Torturing the Artist: Celebrity and Trope in Media Representations of the Abstract Expressionists" and received Honors from the thesis committee. It received additional funding from the Theatre Department to examine one of those media representations in the form of a stage play.
