Hello! I’m Abby, an educator and artist with over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring students spanning preschool through adult learners. I hold a BFA in Studio Art and an MA in Art Education from NYU, along with a professional art teacher certification. My experience includes classroom teaching, small-group homeschooling, and individual tutoring. I’m deeply committed to meeting students where they are and helping build confidence in learning.

In my art instruction, I work with children, teens, and adults at all levels. I specialize in painting (acrylic and watercolor), drawing (including portraiture using pencil, charcoal, and pen), as well as exploratory approaches in collage, mixed media, and printmaking. Lessons are process-based and student-driven, with an emphasis on skill development, creative problem-solving, and discovering an individual artistic voice. I also work with students on portfolio preparation for art schools.

Alongside art, I offer tutoring in reading, writing, and general academics at the elementary level. I’ve integrated literacy and core academic skills throughout my teaching and have led a homeschool group across all subject areas. I make sure academic learning is engaging and fun, using a strengths-based approach tailored to each student’s interests and learning style. Grade-level standards can be incorporated as needed.

I have extensive experience working with students with disabilities, including autism, and have taught in special education settings. This background informs my inclusive, accessible teaching style and my regular incorporation of social-emotional learning (SEL) with young learners. Through both creative and academic work, I help students develop emotional awareness, problem-solving skills, and self-empowerment.

Whether working on academic or artistic skills (or both!), I aim to create a warm, encouraging space where every learner can grow.

I’d love to connect and see how I can support your goals!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

In my time as an educator, I have experience teaching students with autism across a wide variety of settings, including general education, self-contained classrooms, and a District 75 school specialized in autism. I also have experience at a nonprofit supporting autistic adults and families looking to get their children evaluated for autism for OPWDD services. Throughout my career, I have advocated for autistic individuals and have searched out tools to support each learner where they're at, drawing from a strengths-based approach.
Drawing

Drawing

My background in art and art education spans a wide range of media. My focus in drawing is primarily charcoal, pastel, pencil, and pen. I have extensive experience with realistic portraiture, and have worked on commissions for portraits of children and wedding invitations. I love incorporating drawing into mixed media projects with collage, printmaking, and painting.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

The majority of my time teaching in schools has been at the elementary level. I've taught art primarily, but have also taught all common core subjects--this has been both through arts integration as well as teaching other content matter as its own subject. I've focused on literacy, and use social-emotional learning to help elementary school students build confidence, emotional awareness, and problem-solving skills.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

As an educator, I use SEL (social emotional learning) to guide my teaching. SEL supports skills such as emotional awareness and regulation, problem solving, flexibility, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. These are all necessary components of successful executive functioning. When students need more explicit support, I provide individualized scaffolds and techniques, adapting to what works for each student.
Homeschool

Homeschool

During the hight of the pandemic, I lead a homeschool-style "pandemic pod." I taught across all content matter, ensuring that students were prepared for the next school year. I used my background in art education and social emotional learning to ensure students had a positive and engaging learning experience.
Painting

Painting

My background in both my own art and in teaching emphasizes acrylic and watercolor. As a teacher, I've supported students in working with the unique qualities of each medium. In my own work, I often combine acrylic and watercolor with collage, exploring where images can blend into each other and with what technique. I encourage my students to refine skill as well as engage in playful exploration.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I started working with students with special needs when I was in college, and have found a passion for it in my work as an educator in a wide range of settings, from a District 75 school to art in community schools. I'm dedicated to providing students with individualized support. This means really listening and attuning to what those needs are, and responding with experience, knowledge and care.
