I believe tutoring is essential to a student's confidence and success. Whether the student is simply looking to perfect a skill or needs assistance in order to reach their academic goals, working one on one allows challenges not to overwhelm but to be broken down. Throughout my years of tutoring, I've found that the primary hurtle in learning is the student's view of themselves as a learner. I aim to help students realize what they already know first, giving them the confidence to address what they've found to be more difficult. If we feel encouraged as capable learners, we will believe in the possibility of getting a higher grade or mastering a new skill.
As an elementary school kid, I was enrolled in a community tutoring program, Homework Help @SPSA. While at school, I often was teased for working slowly. But at tutoring, I could work at my pace and I began to see that I decide what I'm capable of, not others. This realization helped me to earn the spot of valedictorian in my middle and high school. When I graduated, I attended Bard College. While at Bard, I worked as a writing tutor first in Spanish writing, and then in thesis writing. I loved learning about other student's classes while helping them with structure, grammar, and ideas.
In the years since graduating college, I've continued tutoring. I am a native English speaker but have spoken fluent Spanish since I was five. I taught English lessons to recent immigrants and Spanish lessons to volunteers. I spent multiple years tutoring for the GRE en Español. I've worked with middle school and college students in improving their Spanish grades. I've spent the last 4 years as the co-coordinator of the tutoring program that all those years ago I was tutored in myself. Our students range from kindergarten to 12th grade. In addition to coordinating, I have my own student who I've had the pleasure of working with the past 5 years.
It would be my honor to work with you or your kid not only in improving grades, but also in improving confidence.
