Bio

Hi! I'm Kevin. My academic career has been pretty varied – from architecture, through to sociology, and I have finally ended up in history, where I am working on my Ph.D. dissertation at Rutgers University. Along the way, I've picked up a ton of experience in diverse disciplines, but these days I specialize in history, writing, and test preparation, which are my favorite subjects to explore and to teach. I love teaching and tutoring, and am always looking to bring my enthusiasm to any lesson...

Hi! I'm Kevin. My academic career has been pretty varied – from architecture, through to sociology, and I have finally ended up in history, where I am working on my Ph.D. dissertation at Rutgers University. Along the way, I've picked up a ton of experience in diverse disciplines, but these days I specialize in history, writing, and test preparation, which are my favorite subjects to explore and to teach. I love teaching and tutoring, and am always looking to bring my enthusiasm to any lesson or project. When I teach, I prefer to begin with a discussion with the student, figuring out (and helping them figure out!) what they want to get out of our sessions – be it mastery of the subject matter, or an essay, improved test scores, and so on. From there, I will develop a lesson plan and share it in advance so the student knows exactly what to expect, leaving time for discussions, picking up class work and assignments, and so on.

I have a year of tutoring experience, working with students at Collegiate School, Horace Mann, Dalton, and other New York City-area private high schools in writing, history, literature, and SAT, ACT, and Regents test prep. Additionally, I have tutored college students in political economy, sociology, and US history, as well as taught history and sociology for four semesters at Rutgers University.

I pride myself on being available and open to both parents and students. I am happy to work with both to achieve whatever their goals may be, and I know that any given tutoring session is just one event of many in a busy life. ACT English and Reading can be quite simple with the understanding that the tests are puzzles which demand students understand their logic. Remembering grammar rules and vocabulary is only so helpful in this regard! Instead, I help students understand how the test makers themselves assemble their questions, and the answers they're looking for, improving the students' understanding and mastery of the test.

I am currently in my final year of my history Ph.D. and working on my dissertation. Additionally, I have taught US history for a number of years, in both classroom and tutoring environments. In particular, I specialize at working to fill in the gaps in the classroom curriculum or focusing on problem areas, as well as going the 'extra mile' for students taking AP/APUSH.

I graduated with a M.Arch in 2014 and worked full-time as an architect until 2019, and freelanced thereafter. Additionally, I have taught two years of architecture classes, including studio, at New Jersey Institute of Technology, from the years 2022-2024.

I have used AutoCAD and related programs professionally in various workflows across a variety of building typologies, including residential, commercial, retail, and others. Additionally, I have taught AutoCAD and other drafting software for two semesters at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Besides having all the practical experience in essay writing one picks up over spending, essentially, a lifetime in school, I also have extensive experience teaching essay writing. As a teacher and professor, I have graded hundreds of essays, some to my own rubric/grading qualifications and many to others. As a tutor, I have helped shepherd dozens of students and their essays from initial concept to finished, polished final product – while following all appropriate structural and thematic requirements so the student gets the grade they want.

I have taught two students on Regents material specifically, in English and History (US). In both cases, we developed an intensive lesson plan incorporating publicly available tests, going beyond what the teachers were doing in the classroom. In particular, we focused intensely on the SEQs (Short Answer Questions) and Civics Essays, working to build confidence and develop a set of procedures for quick, precise, and proficient essay writing.

I have worked with a number of students to improve their SAT Reading and Writing scores. I suggest students treat the SAT like a puzzle which always follows some simple logical rules which are easy to learn and remember. This method undercuts typical approaches, which tend to prioritize rote memorization of vocabulary and grammar rules – and is both more engaging and helpful than simply following the book!
