I’m a professional tutor with decades of experience, working both one-on-one with students of all ages and as a high school instructor. My approach combines honing necessary skills to help you master whatever you’re struggling with, sharing effective strategy for exams and assignments, and building the confidence you need to get you where you want to be. I create a collaborative, enjoyable environment in which you’ll feel free to ask questions and empowered to make sure our sessions are delivering exactly what you need.

I’m a published essayist, with degrees in law and creative writing. A winner of the Scholastic writing contest, I find my love of the written word often proves contagious. As a parent myself, I understand a thing or two about busy schedules and the trust involved in seeking partnership for your child’s education. In my spare time, I’m an avid bicyclist, and I love science fiction movies.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I am a published writer, the author of one well-reviewed book and a tremendous number of essays and poems that have appeared in major national publications (The Believer, The Baffler, Conjunctions, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among many others). I also worked in the publishing industry for more than a decade, frequently coaching professional authors, as well as editing their work. In terms of educational experience, besides my decades as a writing tutor, I’ve spent several years in the classroom as a high school English teacher. A winner of the Scholastic writing competition myself, I love helping students prepare for writing contests. Whether you’re the parent of a young author looking to bring home that Gold Key or a PhD candidate struggling to do justice to your own dynamic ideas, I specialize in helping clients get everything down on the page with expressive fluency, impeccable grammar, and a bit of personal flair.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have published widely praised essays in major national publications including The Believer, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Music & Literature, BOMB!, and others. I have also supervised and edited writers at several successful literary publications. Since 2005, I have helped dozens of clients secure admission to undergrad and graduate programs, as well as succeed on challenging essay assignments for classes ranging from junior high school to PhD programs. I excel at ensuring my clients have the confidence and skills they need to write persuasively and expressively, with impeccable grammar and a bit of personal flair.
Latin

Latin

I love Latin — but I know not all students feel this way. Whatever your current level and no matter the challenges, I will work with you to make it all come together — vocabulary, grammar, declensions, conjugations, all of it. I can also help tie Latin into subjects like English, Spanish, and SAT prep, to help you get the most out of it. Even if you hate Latin, I can make it come alive and help you through those long, winding sentences.
Law

Law

Law school presents any number of challenges. I can help you meet them. With years of tutoring experience — and my own law school journey — to guide me, I know a lot about where law students struggle and what tactics can help them get through deadlocks and continue advancing toward successful legal careers. Whether it’s breaking down rules, helping with executive function, or editing memos together, I can help simplify the thorny stuff and get you to the finish line.
Legal Writing

Legal Writing

I have a JD, am a published writer, and excel at providing advice to build your confidence and boost your forcefulness and accuracy as a legal writer. Together, we will empower you to craft the most effective legal writing possible, with impeccable grammar and citations, solid language, and special attention to the rigors of interpreting case law and fact patterns.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have worked as a professional proofreader in the publishing industry for many years, and have proofread more than 50 commercially published books. I have successfully applied different styles and worked with challenging situations like non-standard speech, works written in more than one language, and tricky grammar of every kind. I have also proofread PhD theses, websites, and clothing catalogues. I know Chicago style cold and can quickly adapt to apply other standards where necessary.

Amazing tutor

My daughter and I were dazzled by Ian! He’s a patient and funny tutor who is happy to go the extra mile to ensure that his students truly understand difficult concepts. She needed help understand some fundamental concepts from Latin grammar that confused her, and says that Ian helped her understand the rules and explained how they resemble concepts she knew from taking Spanish. She was also impressed by the breadth of Ian’s expertise, and not just in Latin: he’s very knowledgeable about Roman poetry, and was able to help her develop her ideas and structure a short essay she needed to write about her translation. She was absolutely WOWED, and will definitely be working with Ian in the future, both for Latin and essay writing!

Ian is a superb tutor

Ian is a superb tutor. Our family is so thankful to Wyzant for having such a knowledgeable, in-depth Latin tutor. My daughter was worried if she would be able to master Latin. Thanks to Ian’s expertise, kindness and passion to teach Latin, our is in love with mastering Latin.
