I am a conservatory trained music teacher with years of both academic and real-world training. I earned my undergraduate degree in New Orleans, one of the major cultural centers of America, where I also worked as a full-time professional performer and won numerous awards for both academic achievement and musical composition/performance. I received my masters degree from the prestigious New England Conservatory, also working full-time as a piano and drum teacher and graduating with a 3.91 GPA. I also have extensive experience with world music, having performed Haitian and West African traditional music for ceremonies and public concerts, and spent three years in India studying Carnatic classical percussion with some of the great contemporary masters. I'm now based in New York City where I have spent a full school year directing a rock band program at KAPPA International in the Bronx as well as giving private lessons and tutoring.

I've been teaching for about a decade, with experience both in classrooms and private lessons. I believe the way to make music fun and accessible is by helping the students understand what it is about what I'm teaching that makes music sound great. I have extensive classical and jazz theory and practical knowledge from my education, but I also like to mix things up by adding in examples from music around the world as well as the student's own input. I believe it's important to help the student develop and understand their own reasons and approach to music, even though that usually involves first building a foundation and/or meeting academic standards.

I have taught students from below age 5 all the way to 50+ and have had great results! Reviews can be found on my website.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have studied composition with Yotam Haber, renowned composer featured in Bang On A Can and others. My composition "The Serpent" won the Ernest Svenson Jazz Composition Award at University of New Orleans and I have produced two full albums of original music, working on a third currently. I have studied both jazz and classical music theory extensively, including special courses on the music of Iannis Xenakis, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Duke Ellington. I am also familiar with the College Board AP music theory exam material.
Drums

Drums

I have played the drums for over 20 years, earning a Master of Music and having approximately 1,000 concert performances. In my time, I have studied with a host of incredible drummers and percussionists such as Johnny Vidacovich, Ricky Sebastian, Jason Marsalis, Tyshawn Sorey, Rajna Swaminathan, Jerry Leake, among others. I also have extensive experience in West African and Indian percussion.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I underwent extensive ear training as part of my education and earning both a bachelors and masters in music. As a teacher, I believe that relating the notes on the page to what you hear is one of the most essential skills a student needs.
General Music

General Music

I have earned a master of music from the prestigious New England Conservatory, graduating with a 3.91 and working with some of the greatest musicians in the world. I have extensive real-world experience as a performing musician, having toured the United States, India and Singapore, and released multiple albums. I am also familiar with the College Board AP music theory exam. I am skilled at playing and instructing drums, piano, and percussion.

I have extensive experience in music theory, leading to my Masters of Music from the prestigious New England Conservatory. I studied classical, jazz and world music theory, and have experience with west African traditional music and an extensive background in Indian music as well. I studied composition with the great Yotam Haber of Bang On A Can fame. I am also familiar with the College Board AP music theory exam.
Piano

Piano

I learned piano starting when I was five years old and studied both classical and jazz styles in conservatories including the prestigious New England Conservatory. I have taught piano for a decade, and I specialize with beginners as well as those learning piano from a compositional background.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I completed sight-singing and aural skills up to the masters level and have a degree from the prestigious New England Conservatory. I think being able to link notes on a page to real sounds is one of the most important skills a musician needs to learn.

Excellent Tutor.

Joey was able to teach some assigned fundamentals of introduction to music theory that I wasn't able to grasp. At the end of the lesson, I felt like I thoroughly understood the material and was able to nail my two assignments. He is amazing and I will be headed back to him should I need another session or two. He is excellent.
