Hello! My name is Joel, a Brooklyn native who feels most at home in the classroom. I hold a combined B.A. & M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Harvard and am now pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, researching the mathematical foundations of data and communication, the field better known as information theory. I have helped dozens of Harvard undergraduates and graduate students learn math, physics, electrical engineering, and statistics.
I earned perfect 100s on the NYS Algebra II/Trigonometry, Chemistry, and Physics Regents exams, scored 1560 on the SAT (800 Math, 760 Verbal), and received 5s on AP Calculus BC and AP Physics 1, 2, and C, among others. Lastly, in freshman year of college, I completed Harvard's Math 55 course, the university’s honors sequence in analysis & abstract algebra (often cited as one of the most rigorous undergraduate math courses in the U.S.).
For over two years at Harvard, I was a part-time TA for introductory statistics, signal processing, and circuit theory. I led weekly discussion sections and labs, graded assignments, and held office hours for undergrads and visiting high schoolers. The experience honed my classroom management and showed me how quickly students grow when they are both challenged and supported.
I often teach as if I am instructing my younger self: a slow learner who needs concepts broken down clearly, built back up methodically, and reinforced with patience. Whether you need help in algebra, physics, or advanced topics, I will meet you where you are, start with the fundamentals, and stay with you on your path!
I’m committed to making STEM welcoming for everyone, and I have a special passion for supporting students from under-represented backgrounds, including women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and first-generation/low-income learners.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or just to say hi! I look forward to getting to know you and helping you succeed!
