My name is Miles and I am excited for the opportunity to help students excel in math. This past June I graduated from Hunter College where I received a Master’s in Education with a focus on Adolescent Mathematics (Grades 7-12) and the accompanying certification. My name is Miles and I am excited for the opportunity to help students excel in math. This past June I graduated from Hunter College where I received a Master’s in Education with a focus on Adolescent Mathematics (Grades 7-12) and the accompanying certification. During my time at Hunter I spent time in the classroom each semester assisting and teaching classes including 7th and 8th grade math, Algebra I/II, Geometry, and Precalculus. I particularly enjoyed and got the most out of the last semester of the program which was full time student teaching where I taught Geometry and Precalculus.
During that time I was really able to build a rapport with the students and refine my ability as an instructor. I have always enjoyed mathematics, in particular how mathematical concepts are interconnected and build off of one another. To me, this is the magic of math and the key to having success in the subject area. In the classroom I observed how many students would see a new topic or concept and immediately shut down because it was unfamiliar to them. As a teacher I always aim to have my students think of their prior conceptual knowledge as the foundation and the new topic as merely a minor extension. However, in the classes I taught many of the students had significant gaps in their prior knowledge and understanding, which were often difficult to address individually in a class with 30 students. However, in a 1 on 1 tutoring session it will be easier to dig in and address gaps in that foundation giving the student a strong base to build off of moving forward both with and without the support of a tutor.
