About Johnna

Bio

Hello, I’m Johnna! I started working as an independent artist and teacher in Osaka, Japan from 2013-2022 before settling down in Brooklyn to continue my art practice.
While working towards my degree in Studio Art for my Bachelor’s, I crafted a link between classes unrelated to my major such as English, psychology, and philosophy. By connecting lessons from my art classes to my other interests, I realized how important it is to bring what you love to your art practice.

Early on, I started teaching at Kindai Daigaku in Osaka, Japan, where I spent seven years (2010-2017) guiding students in both Art/Creativity and ESL. As a teacher, I curated art classes, crafted lectures, and orchestrated creative discussions, delving into topics such as Art theory, Color Theory, and Japanese art history. Beyond my institutional role, I have a decade of experience in private tutoring, specializing in Art for students from middle school to college levels.

Currently, I work with a combination of a developed syllabus alongside sessions to assess your needs in terms of personal curiosities as a developing artist. While making sure you harness a good understanding of color theory, I work with you to explore the convergence of personal narratives, philosophical concepts, and material exploration. This interdisciplinary approach fosters a deeper understanding of art and cultivates the ability to craft unique compositions and narratives, giving you an idea of where you stand within our current art history.

Because I was so incredibly inspired by my professors and tutors throughout my academic journey, I hope to pass on the same excitement and lessons for developing your art practice. Feel free to contact me any time with extra questions or how you hope to develop your work!
