I graduated from Scripps College with a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience. While in college, I worked with students one-on-one as a chemistry tutor. Upon graduating, I completed masters-level coursework at the MGH Institute of Health Professions within their Communication Sciences and Disorders department. I studied a variety of topics including neuroanatomy, language and development, and structured literacy. I worked one-on-one with students during this time, supporting their language and communication skills. I also discovered a passion for literacy and education work.

I use an evidence-based approach to teaching, which is especially important for literacy. My students benefited from my structured literacy approach, based on the Orton-Gillingham Scope and Sequence guidelines. This teaches students invaluable skills for decoding words, spelling, and developing their reading fluency in an organized and systematic way. I also helped students develop their reading comprehension skills through a visualizing and verbalizing approach, encouraging students to develop a richer understanding of the text as they read. In addition to reading fluency and comprehension, I also applied a structured approach to writing. Working with students in middle and high school, I used a teaching method based on the literacy research of Dr. Haynes and Dr. Jennings (“From Talking to Writing”, 2018). This approach provides structure and tools for students by guiding them through the process of essay writing and ultimately building independence. Many of the students I worked with during this time struggled with dyslexia and language learning disorders, and these structured approaches benefited them immensely.

I am a patient and experienced tutor excited to use my years of experience to support students in reaching their academic goals. I am enrolled in a master's of education program currently, and I am excited to bring my knowledge and passion for teaching to my tutoring students. I look forward to working with you!
