Hello, I'm Dillon, a history and writing teacher passionate about helping students excel academically. I currently teach part-time in the Pratt Institute's Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies, where I offer undergraduate courses in global history. I have degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (PhD, 2023), the New School (MA, 2017), and Brown University (BA, 2008). I enjoy the challenge of understanding and working to meet the particular needs of each student, and I am eager to help students at all levels grow more confident and successful in their critical reading, writing, and research skills.
My approach is based on the principle that each student has a distinct set of talents and a unique learning style and encounters academic difficulties for understandable reasons. In our initial meeting, I will try to get a sense both of the student's academic strengths and of any challenges they may be facing. Then we can collaborate in setting specific goals and making a plan to work toward them. I think you will find me to be calm, patient, empathetic, and open to feedback. My goal is to help mitigate aspects of the learning process that might seem painful or onerous in order to help students experience education as a more exciting, fulfilling endeavor.
Although my academic expertise is in history, I am able to help with any subject that involves reading, writing, or qualitative research, including English composition, standardized test preparation, and more. In addition, I have conducted extensive research in French-language sources and spent time living in France, and I would welcome the opportunity to work with students seeking to increase their proficiency in French reading, writing, and/or speaking. I also welcome inquiries from nonnative English speakers hoping to improve their English language abilities. If I may be able to help you achieve your academic goals, or if you have any questions about my background or approach, please don't hesitate to contact me.
