I have a vocation for teaching that has been fueled by my desire to empower young minds to enact positive change in their communities. I have led diverse classrooms primarily focusing on teaching in disenfranchised neighborhoods to marginalized groups of students including those in: the South Bronx, East Harlem and the Bedford/Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
Through my teaching experiences I explored various aspects of mathematical education, from the benefits of procedural and conceptual understandings to the importance of implementing inquiry based learning and grounding math in real world contexts. I have also attended numerous professional developments about the theory, application and logistical practice of teaching math, including going to San Antonio for the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics conference in 2017.
Teaching for sixteen years has allowed me to hone my talent for creating engaging and effective lesson plans, which meet the needs of all learners, including those whose academic achievement exceeds that of their peers. In addition to reflecting on instructional delivery, I practice the invaluable skill of analyzing data to inform further instruction.
As the current Dean of Mathematics for the REACH program, based at a High School, I feel like I have the unique ability to both understand the intention and importance of an equitable and inclusive learning environment as well as the necessary dedication and diligence needed to frequently communicate with parents and students as to their current successes and their potential growth as an academic. I firmly believe that this, along with my dedication for middle school mathematics (evident through my professional experience) will make me a prime candidate to be an effective and engaging tutor for you or your scholar.
