For the last 23 years, I have worked as a private tutor, writing professor, and college admissions advisor with everyone from middle school students to Ivy League PhD students in physics, from Fulbright and law school applicants to middle schoolers just learning the joy of reading. I love working with a broad range of students and thrive on a challenge.

The journey must center on the student, and I meet them where they are. Whether they are preparing a personal statement for college admissions or establishing study and organizational skills to become more academically motivated, I work closely with students of all ages and find joy in facilitating their exploration through writing. I have particular skill in identifying impasses to academic success and through my mentorship students embark on a process of self-discovery. Learning is as intuitive as play, but obstacles are created that make learning difficult. I seek out ways to help students to push beyond these obstacles by exploring the unique ways that they learn, a reflexive process that leads toward confidence and happiness in school, and hopefully, in life.

Preparing to do the work of learning in college (and beyond) requires one-on-one mentorship, and I have spent a career working with students to achieve their writing and learning goals. My credentials as an author (Bloomsbury) and professor (three graduate degrees in writing: MA, MFA, PhD) have been vital to my training, but as you will see, what sets me and my work apart is the joy that I feel seeing a student grow into a bigger and brighter version of themselves.

Fantastic Tutor and Person!

When I signed up for my first lesson, I was expecting a quick mark-up of my personal statement with largely grammatical edits. Ben is someone who goes above and beyond to help you to be the best writer you can be. With his guidance, I was able completely reconfigure a fragmented essay into a compelling personal statement that captured my personality. I ended up having many more sessions with Ben for all my supplemental essays as well. A truly amazing writer, tutor, and person!

Amazing Tutor

Benjamin is by far an amazing writing tutor, and I highly recommend hiring him for anyone who needs assistance with their grad purpose statements. He has been a tremendous support and help in clarifying the reasons for my grad school purpose statements, especially on topics of justice and equity.
