To specify my educational status, I received a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Berkeley with minors in Music and Theater. My educational endeavors at Berkeley and abroad have prepared me for skills and responsibilities required of a tutor in the multi-cultural center of New York. I have been speaking the French language for the past fifteen years and spent my third year of collegiate studies in Lyon, France at the Université Lumière Lyon 2, improving my French language capabilities. So, that period of my life, alone, helped develop my capacity to tutor others in the French language. My extensive experience as a student of music from the age of three also prepared me for tackling a life as an educator in the field of music.
But, above all else, my experience as an after school chess and music teacher in Brooklyn for the past two years and my time as substitute teacher in the SF Bay Area, particularly in Oakland and Emeryville, have given me the necessary knowledge to work effectively and reliably in an education-type environment. I've worked with students of all ages, so I'm quite versed in applying my expertise to most situations and revising my teaching methods based on any particular student. For example, during the past school year, I taught chess to a group of third graders and to a group of high school students. The high school students picked up rules, strategy, and approaches a lot easier than the third graders, so with the third graders, repetition to help them learn the names of different pieces and how they moved worked quite well whereas the high school kids learned best by playing the game from the get go. In short, everyone learns differently so I feel that it's important to change how you teach depending on the way each student prefers to learn.
I feel that my educational background and my experience abroad and in the workplace more than qualify me for any tutoring position that you are currently looking to fill. I look forward to working with you!
