Hi! I’m Griffin, a musician, poet, and artist with degrees in Music and English (B.A. 2018, double major, honors in both) from Yale. The Wire has described my music as “impressive” and “original”: it spans genres like jazz and improvised music, electronic, pop, rock, and concert music/classical. My poems appear in The Paris Review, Plume, Poetry Northwest, Prelude, and elsewhere.

Within music, I’m a composer, drummer, songwriter, vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist (piano/keyboards). I have 13+ years of professional performing, recording, composing, engineering, and production experience. I’ve toured across the U.S. and Europe at venues like the Cornelia Street Café, Miller Theatre, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Birdland, Caramoor, PS21 Chatham, Mercury Lounge, the Owl, TV EYE, and SOB’s (NY); MASS MoCA/Bang on a Can LOUD Weekend (MA); Morse Recital Hall, Space Ballroom, and Beinecke Library (CT); PhilaMOCA, World Café Live, and the Trocadero (PA); the Baked Potato (LA); Donau115 (Berlin, DE); Celeste and Fabrik (Vienna, AT); Punctum (Prague, CZ); La Schola Cantorum (Paris, FR); and the highSCORE Festival (Pavia, IT).

I’ve been commissioned by the YCBA and new music groups like Opera Elect; premieres and first realizations include performances by the S.E.M. Ensemble, the YSO, and members of the icarus Quartet. I’ve studied with Nobel Laureates and Guggenheim Fellows and shared stages with Pulitzer Prize-winning musicians.

I’d be thrilled to work with you on drums, composition, songwriting, piano/keyboards, music production, electronic music, music theory; poetry, fiction, non-fiction, academic, and application writing; analog and digital photography—you name it! I teach in-person (NYC) and online lessons to all levels of students and have tutored various ages, instruments, and subjects since 2015.

I develop lessons around material you’re interested in learning. This keeps things fun and also helps ground fundamentals/technique through association. Let’s get started!

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I’m a professional composer with extensive international experience in multiple genres and various instrumentations: concert music/classical, jazz, experimental pop, electronic, improvised music. I’ve written for everything from orchestras to three-piece punk groups. My music has been commissioned by the YCBA and Opera Elect and premiered/debuted by the S.E.M. Ensemble, members of the icarus Quartet, and the YSO. I studied music composition at Yale under Konrad Kaczmarek and Kathryn Alexander.
Drums

Drums

I’ve been performing, recording, and teaching drums and percussion professionally for nearly 14 years, and have performed throughout the U.S. and Europe in wide-ranging settings—jazz, rock, pop, experimental, improvised music—as well as contemporary classical percussion premieres in the U.S. I’ve performed with Pulitzer Prize and Grammy-winning musicians and many international luminaries across genres. As a recording musician, I regularly work in some of the top studios in New York City and on the East Coast at large.
Ear Training

Ear Training

Want to sharpen your ears? I have a thorough background in ear training and can help you think more fluently in sound. Academic ear training at Yale and countless hours of on-stage ‘schooling’ inform my daily work as a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer—and yes, as a drummer, too! I’d be excited to help you on any aspects of tonal or atonal ear training and general musicianship (including rhythmic ear training).
Music History

Music History

Have questions about musicians, composers, traditions, conventions, or eras in—or across—certain music histories? I’d love to curate some listening for you; dive deep into the layered sociocultural histories of sound; or just hypothesize about what might come next. I have decades of in-depth, academic, and experiential education on the histories of classical and contemporary music; jazz and improvised music; pop, rock, R&B, and other stylistic off-shoots of American song form; electronic music (including hip-hop); and the unwieldy world of experimental music.
Music Production

Music Production

My production work has been praised by The Wire as “impressive,” and Bandcamp notes its “tapestry of sound.” I am fluent in Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools, GarageBand, Max/MSP, Pure Data, and similar programs. In addition to my own music, I routinely work as a professional mixing, mastering, and recording engineer for other artists in a variety of styles.
Piano

Piano

Piano skills are essential for any contemporary musician, whatever their main instrument may be. I’ve taken academic piano lessons at Yale as well as performed extensively on piano, synth, and keyboards in professional stage and studio settings. Message me to set up a lesson!
Songwriting

Songwriting

My songs, which combine influence from the futures, presents, and histories of rock, pop, jazz, electronic, hip-hop, concert music, and improvised music, have been called “original” and “of diverse character and drama…that keeps you on your toes” by The Wire Magazine. My poetry also appears in The Paris Review, Plume, Poetry Northwest, Prelude, and elsewhere. I love all styles and am always eager to hear new ideas and voices.
Writing

Writing

I’m a published writer whose work has been supported by fellowships and awards from Yale and the Connecticut Poetry Circuit. My poems appear in The Paris Review, Plume, Poetry Northwest, Prelude, and elsewhere. Additionally, I tutored undergraduate and graduate students for three years at the Yale College Writing Center on many types of writing: academic essays, applications, creative writing, journalism, and the like. During that time I also became certified to tutor non-native English speakers.

Knowledgeable, friendly, interested tutor

Griffin helped me go through a song and determine production and mix elements that may need some tweaking. Griffin answered my questions and kept his answers very concise and thorough. We discussed compression, EQ, saturation, vocal production and more.

Elastic audio

He was very clear with resolving on what I needed help with.Definitely very helpful. He gave me a lot of good tips with elastic audio. He explained mixing to me and I now have further information about it.

great teacher, so relatable!

My teen thoroughly enjoyed his music theory and production lesson with Griffin. The material was presented in a manner which made it easy for my son to grasp. No longer feeling the frustration that comes from learning new technology, he now has the confidence to explore the ins and outs of his production equipment and software. Thank you Griffin!
