Hi there! I'm Mary, an instructor of English Linguistics and a well-experienced tutor with 100s of hands-on hours in Writing, Applications Consulting, ESL, Spanish Language, and Linguistics Tutoring. I graduated top-of-class from Reed College with a degree in Linguistics and a minor in Spanish, where I tutored both of these subjects, as well as taught ESL at a local community center. After graduating from college I received two consecutive Fulbright fellowships to teach English at the National University in Bogotá, Colombia. Afterwards I stayed to be a full-time instructor of linguistics, anglophone history, and philology, which is my current position.

I particularly love helping students refine their writing, and language more broadly, to allow their "I" to shine through. I've helped students with everything from earning Fulbright awards to formulating doctoral research, and I would be honored to help you "tighten, brighten, and sharpen" your work so others can see you for who you are.

As of 2020, I am TEFL certified and currently teach both ESL and Writing full-time, so I would love to help you with any and all English skills. Because of my background in formal linguistics, I'm eager to break down complex phenomena of both English and Spanish into easily-understood lessons.

I'm a lifelong educator, having tutored more than 50 students across this platform and others, conducted both in-person and online full classrooms in 4 different countries, and written my undergraduate thesis on Pedagogical Linguistics.

The most important thing for me in all lessons I teach is that your time is used effectively. I want to understand your personal needs and address them directly, making the most of our (unfortunately) limited time together. I look forward to meeting you!

College Counseling

College Counseling

Hi there! I understand you're looking for help with the application process to college or a fellowship, and I'm here to help. I have helped countless students with both essay proofreading as well as with general consulting throughout this process. During our time together I will not just make revisions to your work but will ensure you leave our session with the skills and clarity to make improvements independently moving forward. A bit about me: I was admitted twice to Reed College as well as other top LACs and state schools (I did not accept the first time so I could travel for a couple of years), and following my education there I was awarded two consecutive Fulbright awards to work in Colombia, South America. After extensively researching them these daunting college and fellowship processes, successfully going through them myself, and now coaching new applicants, I want to use my expertise and knowledge to help you earn the acceptance of your dreams!
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I understand learning English can be frustrating and confusing, so I aim to apply my training in formal linguistics to make my native language approachable, intelligible, and fun for you. Utilizing deep knowledge of English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, my classes demystify English and put difficult concepts into terms that you'll understand right away. I design challenging and creative lessons based on your personal language-learning goals, and aim to both build on your own history/experience and draw your attention to facets of this language which you may not have considered before.
Linguistics

Linguistics

/'hɛloʊ ðɛɹ/! Linguistics is both my professional specialty and my passion, and I hope to help you love this subject as much as I do! I know it can be a difficult topic to study, especially the stuff on the S-side (Syntax, Semantics, Morphosyntax), but after 3+ years of tutoring this dense material to undergrads, I've found it can be incredibly rewarding for both parties. I graduated top of my class with a linguistics degree at Reed College, and while there I both tutored and took courses in topics ranging from articulatory phonetics to contact languages to morphosyntactic typology. For my socioling thesis, I conducted discourse analysis to analyze a classroom as a Community of Practice – I love any and all things socioling!! Chances are if you're struggling with a specific subdiscipline, I can help you come to understand it. Don't hesitate to ask, I'm here for you. I look forward to meeting you!
Proofreading

Proofreading

Hi! My name is Mary and I'm excited for the opportunity to help you out. In college I worked as a writing tutor, and as a current professor of English I'm well experienced with the common successes and obstacles that people face in their writing. As we work through your writing, I'll utilize my background in formal linguistics to break down tough concepts, hopefully not just improving your work but giving you the tools you need to do so independently next time. I look forward to meeting you!
Spanish

Spanish

¡Hola! My name is Mary, and not too long ago I was in your position – trying to learn Spanish, feeling frustrated in classroom settings and nowhere near as fluent as I'd like to be. I ultimately combined my training in formal linguistics with formal resources and native Spanish Language media to bring myself to fluency, and I aim to help to do you the same. As a both Spanish learner and a trained linguist, I know better than native speakers exactly which problems you'll encounter in your language journey, and have tried and true ways to remedy them. Whether it's AP Spanish confusion or understanding Bad Bunny you're facing difficulty with, I'll bring a personalized approach to our sessions, always placing focus on conversationality and naturalistic language resources. Espero que nos veamos pronto. ¡Gracias!
Speech

Speech

Hi there! You're probably already aware that public speaking is the #1 fear globally; I'm here to help you get over that fear! In high school I was named national champion in debate, and have continued speaking in front of crowds of 1000+ people since then. It would be my pleasure to help you learn to convey yourself clearly and convincingly in front of everyone from bosses to attentive crowds. Additionally, I hold a bachelor's degree in Linguistics, with which I focused on the articulatory phonetics and phonology of North American English, as well as U.S. dialectology. With my background in public speaking and my specialization in English sound systems, I've helped countless students, both ESL and otherwise, to enunciate clearly and intelligibly, and to feel confident in their English speaking skills. Thank you for reading, I would love to meet you and to help you with your speech and pronunciation!
Writing

Writing

Hi there! I'm Mary, a professor of English, and I'm here to help *you* improve your writing! Whether it's start-to-finish coaching for an AP English essay or putting the finishing touches on a fellowship application, I'd love to meet and use my expertise in linguistics and language teaching to sharpen your writing. In my tutoring I try to translate concepts from formal linguistics into practical strategies for improvement, helping you to not just write more cleanly and concisely, but to help your individual "I" shine through as well. I look forward to meeting you!

Kind, knowledgable, and flexible

Mary is one of the best writing tutors I have had! They walked me through a long and complex essay and application process for a competitive fellowship and gave careful, thoughtful feedback with detailed advice for improvement over the course of multiple multi-hour sessions. Mary is not only an excellent writer and teacher but also brings their experience and knowledge to each session, making the sessions helpful for essay improvement and writing improvement in the long run. Thank you for your help, Mary, and I look forward to working with you again for all of my writing and application needs.
