As a New York State Level III Teaching Assistant with over 8 years of experience working in a progressive elementary school, I have solid first-hand experience effectively implementing project based pedagogy into the classroom, and in one-on-one and small group settings. I believe in getting to know the whole child—meeting the children where they are in their social-emotional and academic development—and adapting my teaching methods to their personal learning style and abilities, while structuring lessons that are both engaging and enriching.

I love teaching Math, and I am very enthusiastic about it! I am skilled in finding creative ways of teaching Math, keeping students engaged, as I build from what they know, and adapt to how they learn or make sense of numbers. I often tell students, “Math is like a puzzle—just have to find that missing piece!“

I believe Science is all around us. I believe in the need for the children to explore and discover the world around them through experiential experiences. I use project based learning to engage children in Science through what interests them, while also providing them with the resources and support needed to grasp and retain important scientific facts to better understand the world around them. In essence, I like to compliment the students own curiosity with concrete facts and knowledge of scientific concepts.

I am a native English and Spanish speaker, educated in a bilingual elementary school, with well-developed verbal and written skills in both languages. I have also learned other languages—Italian, Quichua and Mixteco—so I understand the challenges of acquiring new languages, as a child and as an adult, and becoming fluent in them. In the process of learning these languages, I have learned varied language acquisition techniques, which I now use un teaching these languages to others. I am fascinated by languages, but most importantly, by the people that speak them.

I am a NYS Level III Teaching Assistant with over 8 years of experience implementing progressive pedagogical strategies at the elementary school level, working with children from PreK to 5th grade. I am passionate about students being active learners, and structure my lessons to be adaptive to the students' natural curiosity with experiential and expeditionary activities that support their academic and social-emotional development. With clear objectives in mind, I encourage learner autonomy--making room for students to have a say in their learning, make choices and develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills by reflecting on their learning experience (weaknesses and strengths), and working together on strategies that will continue to elevate their performance and deepen their understanding. As a New York City Department of Education Paraprofessional, working over eight years in a progressive elementary school, I am very skilled in finding creative ways of approaching hard mathematical concepts with visuals, hands-on and fun innovative activities, adapting to the learning styles of each of my students. I am very excited about numbers, and often tell my students "Math is like a puzzle-- just have to find that missing piece!" I am very patient and working at their pace, building from what they already know to help them acquire and grasp new concepts, while keeping them engaged and invested. Working for over 8 years in a progressive elementary school, I have experience with project base learning, where students get to explore their interests while learning about science, and many other subjects, in a very personalized manner. Through research, creative planning and hands-on activities, I support children in learning and strengthening esencial scientific concepts through a much more engaging and enriched experience. I work in close collaboration with other educators to ensure students have basic scientific understandings appropriate to where they are in their development.

I have studied Italian since Middle School and into High School. In High School I passed the Italian Regents Exam with a 98%. A few years after that, I spent three and a half years completely immersed in the Italian language and culture through a volunteer work, where I attended meetings and conducted courses in that language. As a multilingual foreign language learner and instructor, I have acquired many practical foreign language learning techniques that have proven to be effective, and that I now pass on to other language learners.

As an Ecuadorian-American and English and Spanish native speaker, I grew up speaking and living the best of both worlds. Most of my elementary school education was in a bilingual school, where I learned to read and write in both languages, which has helped me have well-developed writing skills in both languages. As a foreign language learner myself--learning Italian, Quichua and Mixteco--I have also been on the other side of the table, and have learned different and innovative techniques for learning languages, which I now use in teaching others, while adapting to the different learning styles of my students. My passion for languages helps me deliver instruction with enthusiasm and creativity, enhancing the learning experience for the language learners.

Incredibly helpful, saved the day!

I was asked to write and deliver a speech/presentation in Spanish in a professional setting on very short notice, and I agreed without realizing how rusty my Spanish had gotten! I connected with Jessica and she was very accommodating with scheduling to find a way for me to fit in two sessions before my presentation. Even after our first lesson I immediately felt much more confident again in my abilities, and she helped to correct mistakes that I was making with my grammar that people usually are too polite to let me know about. I look forward to continuing to work with her even after my presentation in order to push myself to the next level of fluency! Thank you so much Jessica!
