My name is Matthew O., and I have a Bachelor's degree in philosophy. I have a passion for learning, and keep a journal to track something new that I've learned, since we learn something new every day. My main interests are philosophy, science, and history, and I love to learn about the history of all the world’s major religions, and even religions that are obscure. I would say that the subject that I am most knowledgeable in is by far philosophy. I believe philosophy has equipped me with the right analytical tools to deeply engage with a variety of texts that are considerably challenging in terms of verbosity. I have always been a very engaged student, and have memories of teachers picking me to assist other students with texts as difficult as the works of Shakespeare. Since then I feel confident, and have a passion to teach as I love the feeling when you see someone mutually comprehend a particular subject.
I analyze concepts and try to convey messages as clearly as possible. Science, especially in the field of astronomy is very concept driven, and once concepts are grasped then processes can subsequently be understood as well. I like to work on the basis of universals in terms of its effectiveness as the best method to explain concepts. Take for instance the category of color. Colors such as red and blue, can ultimately be explained by having the universal of reflecting light based on emissions of photons on the electromagnetic spectrum, which is what makes them possess the universal of hues. I like to take things apart semantically by breaking down words and their referents. My approach is visual as I believe language is reflective of reality. That is how I would describe my tutoring style.
