About Jacinthah

I began tutoring 15 years ago as a means of giving back to society. I taught Maths and Computer Science, to students with ages ranging between nine and fifteen. I am given to great pride when my students are able to understand concepts that seemed before to be so difficult and now they are able to see its simplicity. This was done through setting a good foundation and providing positive reinforcement.

I taught Technology at Paul Public Charter Middle School, in Washington DC. I also conducted afternoon classes in the aforementioned areas.

I stopped tutoring to pursue an opportunity as a Web Application Developer, for a government organization, however my heart still yearned for the satisfaction of helping students to be there best. My love for tutoring emanated from seeing the successes achieved by my son, through consistency and the following of a well-planned scheduled. When I saw the returns, I took note the techniques and I became encouraged to help other students to be successful in their studies as well.

The goal of each session is to ensure that each student is give the opportunity to thoroughly understand the foundations of each subject area and to systematically progress the developing child as learning becomes easier. Homework assignments were given to reinforced what was learnt. Test questions were also given to ensure that the foundation was well laid.

I am highly proficient in Mathematics and Technology related subject areas. Other subject areas of expertise is English, namely Study Skills, Grammar and Vocabulary.

I am generally available on evenings after 5:30 pm into the night, every day except on Fridays. Saturdays I am not available also until after 6:30pm. My base rate is $34/hour for online lessons.

I have attained my Bachelors Degree at in Computer Science at Andrews University (1995 - 1999) and my Masters Degree (2000 -2002) in Computer Science at Howard University. As an honours student and graduating with the second highest GPA from Howard University, hard-work and dedication was the key to my success. I firmly believe that working hard will allow you to achieve any goal in life.

As such, you can expect hard-work, organization and dedicating in my delivery as an educator of the children given to my care. I look forward to hearing from you and assisting you in achieving successful students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I took Philosophy for Education, English Composition, Studies in Literature, Introduction to Psychology and Communication Skills at my University. I excelled in them at school. They gave an insight into human behavior and the various ways of communication.

Elementary Math

I took basic Maths, Algebra and Trigonometry in High School, whereas I took Algebra 1, Calculus and Discrete Maths in my University. I excelled in them at school. I enjoyed Algebra and Discrete Maths, since they dealt with solving mysteries and dealing with logic.

General Computer

Some of the topics I cover are: an overview of the computer parts, how to properly operate a computer, definitions of computer terms(software, hardware, CD, RAM, memory, USB, flash drive, hard drive, email, internet browsers, modem, DVD, OS) using software(Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.), search engines, saving your data, how to handle spam, how to create and use your email account, how to send and receive messages, how to attach files/images to an email, using Facebook.

Homeschool

I took basic Maths, Algebra and Trigonometry in High School, whereas I took Algebra 1, Calculus and Discrete Maths in my University. I excelled in them at school. I enjoyed Algebra and Discrete Maths, since they dealt with solving mysteries and dealing with logic.

I have taught reading for about 5 years. I have focused on syllables, comprehension, main ideas, cause and effect, expression and other techniques. I enjoyed seeing three finished product of a child who not only can read but understands what was read.

While teaching for those 5 years, Phonics was also taught. I focused on vowel and consonant recognition and sounds, blends, rhyming words, decoding(syllables), phonetic games and other techniques.

I then became a Homeschool Educator. I have taught in a Home school progam in Washington DC for 4 years working with K-6 graders in Mathematics, Phonics and Reading. During this period, I developed lesson plans for those subjects. Students' academic progress was constantly evaluated on a daily basis. Tests were administered and recorded. It is with great joy to see them master these subjects at their schools now.

Microsoft Access

I specialize in creating databases, creating tables with design view, creating input masks, entering data into tables via SQL or Forms, creating relationships between tables, creating Forms, creating Reports, creating Queries, creating lookups, importing data from external sources.

Microsoft Excel

Some of the topics I cover are: Count and Sum Functions, Cell Reference Functions, Date & time functions, Inserting data, Charts/Graphs, Statistical functions, Logical Functions, Text functions, Lookup & Reference functions (VLookup, HLookup), Pivot tables, Frequency Distribution tables etc.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am familiar with Slide creation, Menu functions, Embedded sounds, and Embedded animations.

Phonics

I taught Phonics for two years. I focused on vowel and consonant recognition and sounds, consonant blends and L blends. I also instructed on digraph sounds, rhyming words, decoding (syllables) and phonetic games. These techniques are essential to learning how to read. In the end, the child’s ability to read with the necessary expression is satisfying enough.

Reading

I have taught reading for about 5 years. I have focused on syllables, comprehension, main ideas, cause and effect, expression and other techniques. I enjoyed seeing three finished product of a child who not only can read but understands what was read.

While teaching for those 5 years, Phonics was also taught. I focused on vowel and consonant recognition and sounds, blends, rhyming words, decoding (syllables), phonetic games and other techniques.

Sign Language

Sign Language was another way of expressing oneself. I started about 14 years ago. I used a Sign Language book to learn signs for a song to perform at a wedding.

Later, I enrolled my son in a Sign Language Group which also performs occasionally. As a result of carrying my son for practice, I had to learn the signs in order to teach him at home. Ultimately, the parents of each child was asked to join the group. So now I am part of the group learning the signs for each song and also the sign language vocabulary.

I use the American Sign Language and I have learnt the alphabet, numbers, colours, common words, common phrases, and the signs to popular songs.

Visual Basic

Some years ago, i studied Visual Basic. I was trained in it at one of the certified Computer schools. This was an intensive course. The syntax of VB is very easy. During this VB course, practical exercises were given to us to ensure that we fully understood the new language. At the end of the course I received a certificate with the title "Masters in Visual Basic".

I have used VB for about two years in various projects at my workplace.

Some of the topics I covered was: Syntax, Variables, Global variables, Basic math, Select Case statement, For Loop, Do Until loops, Do While loop, Strings, Functions, Arrays, Dates, Message boxes, Debugging, Placing controls on Forms, Basic operator, If Else statement, Date and time.

I am a VERY beginner in Excel and the program was always foreign and scary to me. She actually has started from the beginning and made it fun. I never thought I could have that happen. She really started from the very beginning for me. Her homework is well thought out and pushes (
