With more than twenty years of experience teaching in a variety of capacities, I can help you improve your English conversation, grammar, literacy, reading comprehension, test scores, essay writing, business writing, vocabulary, listening skills, and confidence using English the way you envision for yourself. I have experience working with middle school, high school, college students and adults. I have been working as a Special Education teacher in a high school setting for more than a decade in the New York City Public Schools, but I have many years of experience teaching overseas and have a masters degree in TESOL as well. Whatever your goals are for using English--whether for business, travel, academics--whether you are searching for a tutor for your child who needs to improve test scores and grades in school--I can help you meet goals, improve literacy, reading comprehension, critical thinking and analysis, and confidence in any situation where you may encounter English in your life.

I have experience teaching business English and conversational English, TOEFL and SAT prep, English for academic purposes, and English literature and composition. These varied experiences mean I have a lot to draw from in tailoring individualized lessons that are based on you or your learner's needs and goals.

As a tutor, my primary objective is to help you or your learner to meet your goals in a learner-centered, learner-specific way. We can use materials that you choose, or you can depend on me to find or create materials that are suitable for you. Whatever your reasons are for wanting to study or work on your English, whether for professional or academic purposes, I can help you reach the goals you have set out for yourself. Please feel free to email me with any questions, to request references, or for an interview or trial lesson.

English

English

I primarily teach ELA classes for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students at a public school in the North Bronx. I teach both classic and contemporary texts that stretch students' minds in literacy, reading comprehension and analysis, and culture. In addition, students get extensive practice in writing in a variety of capacities that help them learn to communicate clearly, present and support arguments, stretch their creative muscles, and develop their voices. I graduated with honors from Pace University with a BA in English/Cultural Studies and have masters degrees in TESOL and Special Education. In addition to that I myself am an avid reader and love discussing and thinking about literature.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have a MA in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College. I taught in Japan in a number of capacities, starting as a teacher of adults and in corporate English classes at a number of companies, but the majority of my time was spent teaching at a private junior senior high school in which I taught both ESL and Literature classes to seventh, eighth, and tenth grades. I have also taught in Thies, Senegal, in which I designed the curriculum for and ran a summer program for eighth grade students. Currently, I work in a very linguistically diverse public high school in the North Bronx in which a number of my students are new arrivals and I provide them ENL supports and services in my classes.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Aside from teaching, I have two years of proofreading experience at a daily newspaper. I also have experience proofreading college and graduate students' papers.
Reading

Reading

In addition to 15 years of experience, I have been trained in multiple reading intervention programs such as Rewards, STARI, Read 360, CCR, and others to ensure that students receive the appropriate reading interventions for their specific needs and age. I have been teaching in 9th, 10th and 11th grade ELA classrooms for the majority of my career, and am passionate about helping students increase their reading fluency and decoding skills, augment their vocabularies, develop critical thinking through text analysis, and express their ideas with precision in writing.
Writing

Writing

I was a composition and mechanics teacher for three years at a well-regarded junior/senior high school in Japan until I returned o the US. Prior to that, I worked in the Writing Center at Pace University, my alma mater. As a writer and researcher myself, I have published several poems and scholarly articles, and know MLA and APA.
