My name is Jack, and I am a secondary school teacher with over seven years of teaching experience in New York City. I taught a range of subjects before choosing English Language Arts. I also am a Drama teaching artist. I have a degree in Theatre and have completed honors level graduate work in English. In addition to teaching, I am an award-winning playwright, published writer, editor and experienced tutor.
I have a range of experiences as a student to draw on as a teacher, including public and boarding school, alternative college, and urban graduate school. I also studied in London, where I experienced a theatre immersion program. I encourage collaboration with my students to co-author their education, and work to make students feel comfortable and supported, to best foster authentic learning and a whole, satisfying educational experience.
Every student has the potential to be outstanding, whether they are naturally studious and disciplined, or easily distracted and reluctant learners. As a graduate student, I have conducted supervised research into various learning styles and am interested in assessing my students' aptitude for English and their natural approach to learning. I tailor my lessons and overall approach to teaching according to the individual needs of each student.
I consider my job as an educator to be a great responsibility as well as a wonderful opportunity with immense rewards. I am passionate about perpetuating enthusiasm for English Language Arts in my students, as literature and literacy are essential to the curious mind and help foster an enthusiasm for life-long learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am an experienced theater professional who is enthusiastic about teaching Theatre for actors, directors, and playwrights. I have a BA in Theater from Antioch College, where I staged an original play as my senior project. Additionally, I spent a semester studying in London in a Theatre intensive program. My curriculum in London included Acting, Shakespeare, Playwriting, and Dance. I subsequently trained as an actor in New York, where I have been involved in numerous stage productions in various capacities, including actor, director, playwright, stage manager, and box office manager. I have experience both acting and directing a variation on the legendary Method acting technique and am also adept at comedy.
