I graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in Astrophysics and African American and African Diaspora Studies. My background in astrophysics has given me a strong foundation in mathematics, quantitative problem-solving, and science, and I scored a 1530 on the SAT in 2019. I have experience teaching and tutoring students from elementary through high school in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I currently teach SHSAT preparation classes to approximately 30 seventh-grade students, where I help students build their math and test-taking skills and work through challenging problems. I have also tutored high school students one-on-one in Algebra and writing, allowing me to tailor my approach to each student's specific needs and areas of difficulty. Previously, I worked with BEAM Discovery as a Counselor and Teaching Assistant, where I assisted rising seventh-grade students with math instruction and provided individual academic support in a classroom setting. I have also worked one-on-one with a fifth-grade student on homework and general academic support.
My approach to tutoring is to first understand how a student is thinking about a problem and where they are getting stuck. From there, I break difficult concepts into smaller steps, explain ideas in different ways when needed, and gradually help students become more independent and confident. I want students to understand why an answer works rather than simply memorize a method. I also adjust my pace and approach based on the student's learning style and use practice problems to identify areas that need more attention.
