Maybe you have a paper due tomorrow. Or you registered for the SAT and, despite prep classes, something’s not clicking and you need someone’s undivided help. I’ve been there—and for 18-years I’ve also been the one to help students like you (even though I may have also assigned that paper you avoided). Maybe you have a paper due tomorrow. Or you registered for the SAT and, despite prep classes, something’s not clicking and you need someone’s undivided help. I’ve been there—and for 18-years I’ve also been the one to help students like you (even though I may have also assigned that paper you avoided). I’m Michelle and I’d love to welcome you into my tutoring and teaching world.
My students range from middle to high schoolers, college students to adults, and yet, despite this range, some elements of my approach effectively remain the same. If we’re working on a reading test together, for instance, I’ll show you how to quickly annotate, paraphrase, and infer so you can select the correct answer without reading the entire passage and finish with time to spare. If you’re writing an academic essay, I’ll show you how to craft an intriguing thesis and accompanying robust body paragraphs that not only satisfy an argument but also deflate the opponent’s. And if you’re embarking on a personal statement, there are ways to make your reader tear up and simultaneously feel impressed—I promise.
I’ve found that the most fulfilling moments emerge when I work one-on-one with students, as I grow to know them as people—-sometimes an opportunity not always available with large class sizes.
I started my tutoring career almost 20 years ago while earning my bachelor’s in English at Pace University and my double Masters (in English and in Education) at Hunter College. I would have continued full-time tutoring if one could subsist in that role like a teaching career, but I am still happy for the chance to do it in addition to instructing students and mentoring teachers. I hope we can have the opportunity to learn from each other.
