Mannes College of Music
I have over 45 years of professional experience in the music business and currently am interested in tuoring music theory, composition, orchestration, songwriting, and music notation. I am a film & television composer whose music has appeared on HBO specials, the Art and Entertainment Network, PBS, the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel. I also provide music for independent film projects, as well as composing and producing music for literally hundreds of audio and video productions adapted from great children's books. My work, composing for Live Oak Media (specializing in children's music) has kept me young at heart for about a quarter of a century. After and during college years I was teaching, and taught both of my children when they were growing up. Although some years have past, once again I am ready to "give back." The only thing I require from a prospective student is: a passion for music. My methods of teaching can be adaptable and even personalized, according to the students age, experience, and style. The specialties I teach cross over, as does music theory, composition, song writing, music notation, and orchestration.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My teaching skills in music composition include writing musical notation, music theory, instrumentation, and musical ensembles (orchestration). Other skills include extended techniques such as improvisation, musical montage, preparing instruments, using non-traditional instruments, and other methods of sound production, electronic production, and sequencing including CUBASE. I have over 40 years of professional experience in all aspects of notation, music theory, orchestration and composition.
The way I approach the lessons will be adaptable to your experience and your goals. For beginners, I have methods of making it fun utilizing musical games. For more advanced students my conservatory education and many years of studying jazz privately enable me to share a lot of valuable tools and skills to help you develop your craft. I also have many years of professional experience doing music preparation for Broadway pit and film score orchestras at Chelsea Music Service in NYC. These experiences enable me to teach you how to properly notate, transpose and read music, to harmonize a melody or become well versed in Jazz Chords.
A thorough knowledge of music theory is an essential tool not only to create and understand musical compositions; a good foundational background in music theory enriches your understanding and appreciation of music on many levels and will enable you to communicate with fellow musicians in a language that other musicians understand.
