Passionate High School Tutor for Earth Science and History

Hi, I'm Spencer! I am a graduate student at Binghamton University studying Adolescent Education in which I will earn my initial teaching certification in Earth Science! For my undergrad, I studied at Binghamton University, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Earth Science and History. I am passionate about history, especially American history.

I worked as a substitute teacher, and a teacher's assistant while I was an undergrad, and have a passion for helping students understand the material. I believe that we all learn at different paces, and as a teacher, it is my goal to help students learn the material at their own pace so that they truly understand the lesson. My biggest goal as a teacher is to help students have that "gotcha" moment, in which they finally understand what is being taught.

I want students to feel that I want to see them succeed. Any resources that the students feel are useful are welcomed into my sessions. As a teacher, I would rather give the student an answer to a problem and explain to them the steps in how to get that answer. This way, the student can see how to solve the problem and relate to others that they may find. It is important for me that I don't teach for the test, but rather the test relates to what is being taught.

Finally, I understand that students and teachers have lives outside of school. When I was a student, the best teachers I had understood that we had lives outside of their class. The teachers would allow us to talk about our likes and interests and even try to share similar interests with us. This made the teachers seem much more approachable. I will try to do this as a tutor by asking the students about their interests and trying to find out more information about them. I believe that what we learn in the classroom should help us become learners outside of the classroom.
