Hello! I’m Phillip, a mathematics educator and tutor with experience teaching students from middle school through the university level. I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy, earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, and am currently pursuing an M.A. in Mathematics at Hunter College.
I currently teach university level Precalculus. Previously, I taught middle- and high-school mathematics, including Precalculus and AP Calculus, and I have more than five years of tutoring experience in Algebra II through AP Calculus AB/BC, SAT/ACT Math, and competition mathematics.
My approach is centered on understanding how each student thinks. Rather than simply showing a procedure, I identify gaps in reasoning, ask targeted questions, and help students develop methods they can use independently. Sessions can focus on building fundamentals, working through challenging problems, reviewing course material, or preparing efficiently for an upcoming exam.
I also enjoy working with students interested in advanced and proof-based mathematics. My graduate studies are in pure mathematics, and my research has resulted in a publication in the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra.
My experience includes university-level Precalculus; high-school Precalculus and AP Calculus; Algebra II through AP Calculus AB/BC; SAT and ACT Math; AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME; and TA experience in Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Calculus II, and Probability/Statistics at Johns Hopkins.
Selected scores: GRE 168V/170Q/5.0 AWA; ACT 35 composite/36 Math; AP Calculus BC 5; AMC 12 108/150; AIME 5/15.
Whether your goal is to strengthen foundations, improve a course grade, prepare for an exam, or tackle more challenging mathematics, I tailor lessons to your background, pace, and goals.
