About John

I am just finishing my PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University. I have a lot of teaching experience, from lecturing in 300 student classes to one-on-one tutoring. I've taught children with reading problems in Holt Michigan, and taught English as a second language to children in Hong Kong, where I also worked as a private tutor. I have taught archaeology and anthropology classes at Columbia University in New York City and at Community College in Baltimore. In sum, I have taught a variety of subjects to different age groups and at different educational levels.

Strong test scores contributed to my acceptance to the PhD program at Columbia, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and insights with students who have ambitious goals for their future. Personally, I am a friendly family man with a young son.

I have experience tutoring High School and College-age students. Based largely on my SAT and ACT scores, I was a National Merit Semifinalist in High School, and received a scholarship to Albion College.

I am a published author, with two articles printed in scholarly journals in 2015. I am completing a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University, an Ivy League institution. I scored in the 99th percentile for the Verbal section of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and received the highest possible score on the Analytic writing section. I have extensive experience working with university students.

I am located in Astoria Queens but am happy to travel to other parts of the metropolitan area. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I currently hold an M.Phil degree in Anthropology from Columbia University. I have worked in the field of archaeology for over a decade. I am in the final stages of completing my Ph.D at Columbia University.

Archaeology

I am a professional archaeologist, and have worked in the field for over a decade. I have led archaeological projects and published both Cultural Resource Management reports and articles in academic journals, including the Journal of Historical Archaeology, the flagship journal for the sub-discipline of historical archaeology.

I have taught archaeology at Columbia University, including the following subjects: Introduction to 21st Century Archaeology, Death and the Body, Origins of Human Society, and Rise of Civilization.

I hold a M.Phil in Anthropology (Archaeology track) from Columbia University and am in the final stages of dissertation writing for my Ph.D in the subject.

Political Science

I took multiple Political Science courses as an undergraduate at Albion College. I have familiarity with Political Science literature including classical authors such as Aristotle, Machiavelli, Marx, and de Tocqueville. I am in the final stages of completing my Ph.D in Anthropology at Columbia University.

Social Studies

As an historical archaeologist, my specialty is the history of the past five hundred years, focusing on the changes that colonialism, capitalism, and technological society have wrought on the world we live in. I am currently finishing my PhD which focuses on the lives of the Chinese-Americans who built the first transcontinental railroad in the United States during the mid-19th century.

Beyond this specialization, I am proficient in teaching a wide range of subject matter covered under 'Social Studies', including US and Comparative Government, Geography, History, Philosophy, Anthropology, and Cultural Studies (particularly East Asia).

My son has a packed schedule, with a full load during the day and an extra class online--history. We used him after the first month of school when it was clear he was falling behind and that the material was very challenging. John answered our request for help with prompt understanding of what was needed to catch up, all the while making it meaningful and relative to today's current events. Joh
