I am certified as a Special Education Teacher for grades 7-12, with a Bilingual Extension in Spanish, meaning that I'm officially qualified to teach English, Social Studies, Science, or Math, whether in English or in Spanish, and to students with their own unique sets of abilities and experiences. I taught for five years in a large public high school in New York City. I taught 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students Global History I and II, English Language Arts, and A.P. Language classes. I taught classes with over 30 students and as few as 3.
My approach to teaching is to be mindful of when to focus on one particular point of information that could be causing confusion, and when to zoom out to see how other seemingly unrelated information actually *is* related, and can therefore serve as a useful reminder to help us fit the puzzle pieces together. I like to build habits to systematize our minds, and I like to experiment with new methods and tools to find an even better path to the thoughts we need. Every student is different, so I need to keep learning from my students in order to help them meet their individual goals. The process of building skills and knowledge is one of exploration and creativity, and my goal is to help students explore how they think so that we can create systems that works better for them (and hopefully make the whole process less scary and more fun!).
I achieved my undergraduate degree in Philosophy at UNC - Greensboro, where I learned about deciphering thought systems from nearly inscrutable texts, how to break complex problems into their simpler logical parts, and explored the meaning behind everything from the natural world, quantum physics, avant-garde art, historical dilemmas, and literary situations.
Through the Teaching Collaborative Program, I enrolled in LIU - Brooklyn for my Master's Degree in Special Education, and that's when my teaching journey began.
