Hi, I'm Chris, a practicing artist specializing in oil paintings and drawings. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, I will customize a lesson plan that suits your goals. You can learn the techniques used by artists since the Renaissance, or choose to break away from them entirely, depending on your creative vision.I have taught private lessons over the years to many individual students, I'm thrilled to be returning to teaching. My previous experience includes teaching art while living abroad, where I honed my ability to share my knowledge.
I began my art education at the Art Students League of New York as a teenager, before earning a BFA from Pratt Institute (Brooklyn) and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (NYC). As an artist, I combine classical techniques with modern tools like the internet and Photoshop. I manipulate references using found images and objects, which I digitally rework to form the basis of my paintings.
In our lessons, you'll learn how to understand light and use it to describe three-dimensional forms. We'll explore color theory, life drawing, basic anatomy, and methods for conveying emphasis in your work. Additionally, we'll cover the rules of composition, atmospheric perspective, and geometric perspective.
A viewer's experience of an image is shaped by where their eyes are drawn and how they navigate the space, guided by the artist's intention. Together, we'll develop techniques that enable you to create images that communicate your vision. These skills are valuable whether you're aiming for a creative career or simply want to explore artmaking for personal growth. If you're considering applying to art school, I can guide you through the portfolio process and help you prepare your strongest work.
