Hello, I'm Elena! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in English and my Master's degree is in Adolescent Education with a focus in English. I have experience teaching all high school grade levels, some middle school, and AP Literature. I currently work as a high school English teacher!

During my Bachelor's, I was trained as a college-level, one-to-one writing tutor. It was this experience that sparked my passion for education. I truly enjoy working one-on-one with a student: whether it is plotting out a paper; deepening analysis; correcting grammar and spelling; or close-reading literary texts, each stage of the writing process is an opportunity for growth for the both of us.

Most of all, I enjoy learning from my students! Whatever topic you are reading or writing about, I sincerely love learning your perspective and helping you express yourself concisely, efficiently, and gracefully!

I've tutored unofficially since I was in high school. My favorite subject to tutor in is English, with a focus in writing. I love meeting my students, seeing how unique each student is, helping them express themselves through writing, and building their confidence in their own skills.

Feel free to reach out! I'm excited to meet you!

Bar Mitzvah

Bar Mitzvah

For over four years, I worked as an assistant in a B'nai Mitzvah class, ranging from 6 to 25 students per class. On a regular basis, I pulled students and worked one-on-one with them on Hebrew, tefilot, Torah readings, Haftarah, Dvar writings, and occasionally trope practice. As the cantor I was working with was undergoing chemo treatments, I frequently led the classes in her absence. I've worked with students of all levels and abilities and of several different sects within Judaism.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

Both in my career as a teacher and in my own personal writing, I've encouraged creative writing of all kinds. I co-run my school's literary magazine, where we focus on poetry and short prose/micro-fiction. We've worked through plotlines, character developments, conflicts and resolutions, setting details, "showing vs telling" (i.e. imagery/description vs exposition), dialogue, figurative language and poetic structure, rhyme schemes, and much more!

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

As an English teacher with 5+ years of experience, essay writing is my bread and butter! My students start from the beginning--with thesis/claim developments--and work their way through the structure of a body paragraph and an essay. We've worked on proper citations, cohesive and concise writing, counterclaims, grammar and sentence structure--everything! We've written analytical, persuasive, argumentative, narrative, and research essays. I've also supported peers in college and many freshmen writing their first college papers. I'm most familiar with MLA but have passing knowledge of Chicago and APA formatting.
Fiction Writing

I've also volunteered as a "beta" reader for over a dozen peers, supporting their writing in their own creative careers. These pieces have ranged from 1.5k to over 25k words! We focused on grammar and clarity, plot development and cohesiveness, character voices, pacing, and much more!

Thorough and helpful tutor

I reached out to Elena to ask for help on preparing for AP Lit for my junior year after a diagnostic that made me feel unprepared. I went from scoring 3 to 4/6 on AP Lit essays to 5.5 to 6/6 on AP Lit essays. She was very helpful in editing every line of my essays, and helped me understand the art of conveying more in less writing. I highly recommend anyone who wants help on improving their essay writing, whether in AP Lit or in general!
