About Charles

Charles Wagner is an experienced writer, editor, and communications professional who is available to teach English as a Second Language, English grammar. test preparation (SAT, TOEFL, etc.), and composition.

He spent more than a decade as the in-house writer and communication strategist at a small, boutique advertising agency specializing in higher education. While there, he produced award-winning student-recruitment publications for a diverse array of client institutions, from Ivy League universities to small religious colleges.

Charles served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), where he taught English and Social Studies at a rural mission school. Charles subsequently taught English as a second language at several private schools in New York City. He has also taught English in Japan.

As a tutor, Charles is patient yet persistent, challenging students to achieve new levels of knowledge and confidence as both speakers and writers. He has a good sense of humor and communicates well with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

He earned a B.A. in history from Bard College and pursued graduate study in political science at the New School University.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer, in several private ESL schools in New York City, and in Japan.
