Bio

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago where I studied philosophy as well as premed while in Chicago. I also have a degree from Northwestern University in Secondary Science as well as a masters in adolescent education from the College of Saint Rose. I completed my PhD in educational policy and leadership and am published in the field for both social studies and sciences.

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago where I studied philosophy as well as premed while in Chicago. I also have a degree from Northwestern University in Secondary Science as well as a masters in adolescent education from the College of Saint Rose. I completed my PhD in educational policy and leadership and am published in the field for both social studies and sciences.

I began teaching at a neighborhood high school as an 18 year old undergraduate and loved it, and I have been teaching ever since.

I have taught students from all over the world - both abroad and at international schools. My experiences teaching include students from kindergarten through higher education and range from subjects of English, Biology, Environmental Science, Math, and Social Studies among others.

I hold multiple teaching certifications, including all sciences biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc. from the State of Illinois and Social Studies from the State of New York.

In addition to my love for teaching, I have helped create three farming villages, and have spent extensive time outside of America both teaching, farming, and community building. I have also coached both men and women's varsity basketball for five years.

Having taught English, philosophy, and classics from 5th grade all the way through college, I am well prepared to help any student with their ACT Reading examination. I have perfect scores for such exams (including the GRE). The tricks to reading a passage and finding the information in the way that most of the standardized tests are looking for is one immediate way in which I can help a student. Understanding how to break down a passage so that you can construct the needed meaning from it for these exams is another. I enjoy such work and would be happy to help you get a better score on your ACT exam.

I have taught high school science for nearly ten years, and have developed the entire science curriculum and syllabus for three different schools for four different sciences. My students have never scored less than a passing score for AP or IB credit. My background includes biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences, and I bring personal experience such as farming and working to create a sustainable village to enrich the material as well.

I have taught math for ten plus years at the middle and high school levels. My undergrad was at the University of Chicago, where I studied premed, and a masters at Northwestern University, where I studied secondary science and math. My students have always passed their exams when I have worked 1 on 1 with them, including a student this past summer who went from a 60 to a 95 on her math regents. I have helped design the math curriculum for two schools. My experiences include working with students with learning disabilities and ESL students. I have taught biology for over ten years. I have run the science department at several different schools and helped one high school earn certification for a higher standard with the curriculum I wrote and enacted for the science department. In addition to my teaching experience with biology, I have worked in several lab settings, and published research within the field. My background includes working with students from all over the world and at all levels in teaching sciences and I particularly have always loved teaching biology and the appreciation for life that it can bring.

I have three years of experience teaching botany at the high school level plus another three teaching high school level environmental science with a heavy focus on elements of botany. In addition I bring my personal experience as a farmer and executive director for a non profit creating a sustainable village (which has largely focused on food security and sustainability - with obvious relationships to the study and appreciation of botany) to the table.

I have also worked in laboratory settings for three years making use of genetic based research (particularly neurological). I have worked with students going from traditional school spaces to a home school environment, or those in a home school environment who wished to transition towards institutional spaces. I am always happy to collaborate on creating a personalized plan of study that brings out talents and passions of the learner I am working with.

In addition to developing three high school's curriculum and syllabi for a nutrition course, I initiated several school wide and community wide projects to incorporate academic knowledge of nutrition with actual practice. This included an integrated and interdisciplinary nutrition course making use of agriculture, ecology, cooking, environmental science, etc.

I have twelve years experience teaching middle school math, including pre-algebra and algebra. This has included preparing students for both IB and AP high school curriculum. Having helped implement math curriculum at several schools I am also aware of ways in which to integrate curriculum both vertically and horizontally with other grades and with other disciplines. My background teaching also includes working with ESL learners, and students with multiple learning disabilities.

I have taught 5th-12th grade for more than ten years, and this has included teaching for the Regents exams for over three years. I have also helped design curriculum and syllabi for multiple schools to help prepare students for such exams and standards.

I took comparative religion coursework as an undergraduate at University of Chicago's Divinity School, among the best in the world. I also have taught at Jewish and Catholic day schools and have taught spirituality/religion in non-profit organizations in a more philosophical/secular approach. I scored a 780 on the SAT Reading when I took that exam in high school, and scored perfectly on the GRE. I have taught philosophy, classics, and English from the 5th grade all the way through the college level. I am a published author in education, including a recent book chapter in a text book on teaching social studies. With an undergraduate degree in philosophy and premed from the University of Chicago, as well as two graduate degrees (from Northwestern University and College of Saint Rose) in education, I have a breath of subjects I am comfortable teaching and analyzing. This has carried over particularly well to guiding students in the skills and mindset required to correctly analyze a reading passage and other such skills that are needed to perform well on the SAT.

I have New York State certification for social studies, with a graduate degree from the College of Saint Rose in teaching secondary social studies. I was a fellow at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy, where a great deal of the coursework and teaching we were taught focused on the social science elements of education. Recently I was published in a text book on the teaching of social studies, and was also invited to give a presentation at the AEPL within the discipline of social studies.
Zoology

Zoology

Having studied zoology with the founder and head of the Delaware Zoo (among others) - I possess a great deal of both hands on experience as well as knowledge within this field. A particularly strong interest of mine are the evolutionary elements and history of zoology, demonstrating the interconnectedness of all life on our planet, and even extending to the relationship between both biotic and abiotic structures. Physiological zoology is also a particular interest of mine, and of course this branch of zoology is intimately connected with evolutionary history.
