About Sherri

My experience with teaching & tutoring started in 1972. Teaching 5th grade was my first assignment & then I continued my degree in deaf education. I'm able to tutor individuals from 2 years old to adults. Subject & expertise areas would include expressive and receptive language skills at all levels; all subjects up to 8th grade; students with an IEP; ADD or ADHD. I have also worked with adults who want to learn to read or improve their writing and vocabulary skills.

Music can also be incorporated into my lessons. I have taught lessons by using songs and playing my guitar, ukulele or banjo.

My teaching techniques are creative, flexible and include personal attention to detail. I use some parts of the Wilson program to help students decode words and improve reading skills. Games, hands-on activities which I developed & monthly surprises keep my students motivated. Parents tell me that my patience has helped their children succeed. I LOVE teaching and will assess each student and then proceed with an individual plan.

Lastly, I am a licensed LPN. I received my license while in the US Army Reserves. This enables me to offer help with the TEAS and the MATH portion of the ASVAB.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have tutored many students with ADD & ADHD. My patience, hands-on activities, knowledge of the Wilson program, music & sense of humor have helped students succeed. The key to success in working with these students is to help them stay on task in a fun way.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been certified to teach elementary education, K-6, in New York State since 1972. I taught 5th grade for 3 years and 6th grade for 6 years. I have substituted in all of these grade levels for many years. I have been tutoring K-6 students since 1990 to the present.

ESL/ESOL

I have been working with ESL students for the past few years. My experience includes students from many different countries in Europe and Asia. I use different ESL books and games to help students learn the spoken and written aspects of the English language.

Hard Of Hearing

I have been certified to teach hearing impaired students, grades N-6, since 1976. I am also certified to teach social studies to hearing impaired students in grades 7-12. I have taught hearing impaired students since 1976.

Phonics

I am certified in New York State with elementary education, grades K-6. I have been teaching phonics since 1972. I use the Wilson program to help teach phonics. It is a phonetically based program.

Social Studies

I have a BA with a minor in 7-12 Social Studies. I also have certification to teach Social Studies to deaf and hard of hearing. I taught Social Studies for three years in a self contained 5th grade classroom. I also taught Social Studies for another 6 years in a multi-age, self contained classroom to students in grades 5 through grades 8.

Special Needs

I have worked with special needs students for several years. My experience includes students with learning disabilities, deafness-blindness, expressive & receptive language deficits & auditory processing problems. I have 6 cousins who have special needs. Growing up I spent time with all of them.

Speech

I have worked for over 25 years with students ages 4-17 who have had speech impairments. This included working on improving expressive & receptive language skills; improving fluency and articulation skills. Some students had very little speech so techniques such as sign language were used to develop and expand speech skills.

Study Skills

I am certified to teach N-6, elementary education and have taught for Questar III for over 32 years. I helped students prepare for the New York State ELA, Math and Social Studies exams.

TEAS

I have a current LPN license as well as a teaching certificate to teach Math, English, Science and Language up to seventh grade. I have tutored many students who were preparing for standardized tests such as the TEAS and have had excellent results. I use various techniques to help students pass this 170-question test. I feel my experiences, education and expertise will help any student become successful in passing this test. Since this test was developed by educators I know as an educator/nurse myself, what it takes to prepare for a standardized exam for students entering nursing school. As of March 2016, I have a 95% track record.

Communicative, Patient, and Methodical

My niece again is very satisfied with her progress while being tutored by Sherri. Her Methods of teaching are very well defined and easily understood. I am very happy that we decided to have Sherri as my niece's tutor. I spoke to her once prior to hiring and informed her that my niece and she would be a great fit. Sherri is honest, direct, motivating, and caring.
