I have a Ph.D. in English literature and have taught college, high school, and middle school. In 2008, I won the College Board Bob Costas Award for Excellence in Teaching Writing for my work on a student publication. ACT English

ACT English

The new ACT essay is designed to allow students to demonstrate critical thinking skills. Students are asked to evaluate three perspectives on a given issue and to propose their own opinions. I help students to critique the three perspectives and to develop their own opinions on the assigned topic. We also focus on essay structure, the use of evidence and data, and the mechanics of essay-writing.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I work with ACT students on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and becoming familiar with the test's format, which is designed to help students answer questions as they read, instead of having to read long, uninterrupted passages and then reread to find answers. I explain errors as we go along so that students learn what they need to know without wasting time on unnecessary review. Students who are taking the ACT will find that they become more skilled and confident as a result of my work with them.
American History

American History

My book, History According to SAT: A Content Guide to SAT Reading and Writing won a silver award in the teen category from the Nonfiction Authors Association. I have a B. A. in history, and I have also co-taught many interdisciplinary History/English classes. I have written reviewed books on a wide variety of historical topics: the War of 1812, the Southern debate over slavery, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, immigration, agri-industry, biographies of important historical figures, and intellectual histories about American society and culture. Finally, I read history for fun, and those books, too numerous to mention here, make me able to teach American history effectively and memorably.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

Studying English Literature requires a comprehensive understanding of Biblical texts because they provide the foundation for much of our thought and culture. I have taken "The Bible as Literature" classes and continued to read and study on my own. I have also published several book reviews on Biblical texts. Although I teach in a religious school that does not belong to my tradition, I find that I am often more knowledgeable about Biblical allusions and references than my students are.

Many of my SAT students also ask for my help with college applications. We work on the many essays that are required, and I am skilled in drawing students out through careful questioning that we then turn into solid essay content. I am familiar with the applications of many universities, and I will work with you to understand the forms, requirements, and deadlines and to turn in the best applications that you can.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Many of my tutoring students are in elementary school--the youngest are in first and second grade, and I have worked with some for over a year. I provide homework help, instruction in spelling, phonics, and grammar, and I also work on enrichment or remediation as needed. I introduce my students to many of the children's classics, which I use because they are rich in vocabulary and complex sentence structures that children need to be exposed to. Finally, I am familiar with both NJ PARCC and Terra Nova, and I help children prepare for the specific tasks that these tests ask them to do.

When working with students on school assignments, I focus on teaching them how to read, write, and think more critically so that they can improve both their grades and their understanding of the subject. I work with elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as with college students who need help with term papers, graduate school essays, Master's theses, and doctoral dissertations in any subject. As a published writer, I teach students how to express their ideas smoothly, clearly, and effectively.

My professional work as a book reviewer includes European history, the time of the ancient Greeks until today. I have special expertise in all aspects of the eighteenth century, the English Renaissance, the Victorian era, colonialism, post-colonialism, racism, anti-Semitism, women's rights, and the wars of the twentieth century. My work as a writer has taught me to write about historical topics clearly and effectively, to use sources effectively, and to connect important concepts and events coherently.

Grammar

Grammar is one of the least taught subjects in school, but it is essential for success on the SAT and other standardized tests as well as for the success of any student for whom English is a second language. I explain the concepts simply and then help the student to recognize patterns and the specific pitfalls that standardized tests generally use. My instruction also helps to improve a student's own writing and reading comprehension because knowing how sentences are structured increases understanding of what they say.

When teaching students to appreciate and understand literature, I focus on close reading skills, vocabulary, paraphrase, and structure. I have a strong background in American and British literature as well as specialties in children's literature. I've also read and taught most of the books that are typically assigned in school. As a classroom teacher myself, I am adept at helping my tutoring students to meet the expectations of their teachers. Many of my students have reported significant grade increases after working with me. I am patient, thorough, and willing to work as slowly or quickly as a student needs.

When I proofread, edit, or revise, my goal is to express your ideas as clearly, smoothly, and effectively as possible. I have been writing professionally for many years and was first published while still in graduate school. I have assisted many students with Master's theses and doctoral dissertations in subjects such as economics, linguistics, and chemistry. PSAT

The new PSAT is aligned to the Common Core standards, and it offers students a chance to sharpen their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Although the test can appear daunting at first, I work with students on strategies that are designed to help them succeed. Sessions include working on practice test questions, grammar instruction, and answering questions based on context rather than on prior knowledge. I am especially good at vocabulary building and reading comprehension because I teach students many mnemonic devices and ways to think effectively about questions that may initially seem confusing. I also work with students who need to improve their scores on PARCC, a test that shares many similarities with PSAT.

I taught public speaking at DeVry University, and I am also an effective speaker myself. Twenty years of classroom teaching creates public speaking skills, and the classes I taught walked students through the many techniques that an effective speaker needs.

I work closely with students on reading comprehension and challenge them to apply critical thinking skills by using the Socratic method of questions and answers. I use materials that are aligned with the Common Core and supplement them with poetry, short stories, novels, and non-fiction. My integrated approach allows students to improve their reading, thinking, and writing skills in a methodical way that prepares them for any assignment they might encounter in school or on a standardized test.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

The new SAT Reading sections are entirely passage based, and the questions ask students to think critically about what they read. To improve reading comprehension, I teach reading strategies and spend time helping students understand what the test questions are really asking. Finally, I teach them to recognize common rhetorical strategies that writers use so that they can recognize the significant nuances in tone and diction that the test questions often target.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The Writing section of the new SAT is passage-based, so I teach students to use context clues to define unfamiliar words as well as the tone, diction, and overall intent of any given writing selection. I provide grammar instruction and assign drills as homework to strengthen students' skills and confidence. I also work with students to understand the nature of the critical thinking task required by the new optional SAT essay, and I teach them rhetorical strategies used in the reading passages they are asked to analyze so that they can recognize and and discuss them effectively in their essays.

I have a near-photographic memory for words and spelling formations. My large vocabulary and fascination with the intricacies of the English language make me effective at teaching this subject to students at all levels. I help students memorize various spelling patterns and rules that increase their vocabulary and comprehension--noticing similarities and differences in spelling greatly improve all aspects of Language Arts.

SSAT

When I teach SSAT, I cover the four subject areas of English--analogies, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing, and I also help students with their application essays. In addition to covering the skills and material students need to know to do well on the test, I address the anxieties that can trouble students who are taking their first high stakes test.
TOEFL

TOEFL

I have worked with many English language learners to prepare for TOEFL and other exams as well as to improve business writing, academic writing, public speaking, and conversational skills. My approach is individualized to meet the needs and goals of each student, but I also stress the basics of English grammar and sentence structure.

I write professionally, and I have over 100 book reviews and feature articles as well as scholarly publications. I even have an essay in a "Chicken Soup" book! I have taught writing for most of my career, in both secondary schools and colleges, and I am especially skilled at expository and persuasive writing. I edit fiction, and I have helped many graduate students complete their theses on topics as diverse as education, chemistry, and linguistics. I often work with high school students on research papers, SAT Essay preparation, and college application essays.

Ms. B is a master at literature and linguistics, and she knows precisely what strategies to teach in order to make taking tests far easier.
