Hey there. My name is John, and I am a teacher, tutor, and academic coach.
Through my experiences as an educator, I've recognized that many students are not being taught the fundamentals of learning. Additionally, many families are underserved by the educational system and traditional tutors. Both options often focus on memorization over understanding, testing over critical thinking, and passing over growing, problem-solving, and living to one's full potential.
Based on these observations, I was inspired to start my own academic coaching business, Academic Empowerment Academy, to empower students to succeed. The emphasis of my coaching is giving students the academic skills they need to sustain academic success. Additionally, I provide subject-specific support so my students can meet their goals.
I graduated from Duke University with a BA in history and also received my teaching license at Duke. I have over ten years of experience as a classroom teacher and academic coach, with a significant emphasis on teaching Algebra, Writing, History, and Study Skills. Although I have worked with various ages and ability levels, I specialize in middle and high school-aged students.
I owe my success to focusing on the individual needs of each student by:
- tailoring all of my sessions to the student's particular needs
- encouraging students to identify solutions before providing my feedback and suggestions
- offering encouragement and solutions for any challenges that a student may be facing
- providing support between sessions via email
