Hi, I’m Lola! I graduated magna cum laude (3.99 GPA) from the University of Nevada, Reno with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. I worked as a writing consultant for two years at my university’s writing center, assisting students from a variety of educational backgrounds and a diverse range of skill levels with writing assignments from academic research papers (English, communications, humanities, history, STEM, etc.), scientific literature reviews, graduate level papers or theses, speeches, presentations, journalism projects, scholarship essays and applications, resumes/cover letters, and even personal writing projects. I am a problem solver with a very sharp editorial eye and I would love to help you improve your writing at any stage—even if you haven’t written anything at all!

At the University Writing and Speaking Center, students gave me very positive feedback after our sessions. They reported that they felt more confident in their abilities and that they gained new writing skills and knowledge. They also liked that we were able to laugh together. Writing can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to suck. In fact, it shouldn’t, and if you work with me, you might even start to like it (if you don’t already).

By the end of our session, you can expect to feel more confident in your understanding of your assignment’s objectives and your ability to fulfill them. I can also help you notice underlying patterns that may be making it difficult for you to write, so that we can begin to instill more healthy writing habits catered to your individual style and needs.

Some examples of things we can work on in a session include (but are not limited to):
Modifying the organization and structure of your paper
Redirecting or narrowing your thesis or supporting points
Improving word choice and explaining concepts
Brainstorming ideas
Drafting cover letters and resumes
Editing a final draft (with explanations!)

Feel free to message me if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment.

Essay Writing

I have helped students with a variety of writing and speaking projects for 2+ years, aiding in their completion of literature reviews, academic papers, literary analyses, scholarship essays, cover letters, resumes, and more. I also received continuous training on the current state of academic writing centers, addressing students’ high-level and low-level concerns, setting a flexible but purposeful agenda in lessons to ensure effective use of time, and helping students learn to navigate the current and changing world of the job market by helping them learn how to tailor their resumes and scholarship letters and highlighting relevant skills and career goals in cover letters. By using this knowledge and these skills on my own time, I was able to participate in a program within a highly competitive industry, publishing. I would be happy to help students and non-students improve their writing skills and apply them within the academic world, the workplace, and beyond. Writing skills are increasingly important in an AI-inundated world, and they can help you cut through the AI-generated noise that professors and employers are being overwhelmed with every day. Writing skills are people skills, and with my expertise and your open mind, we can gain these and more.
Literature

Literature

I actively participated in my English and global literature class discussions about a diverse array of literature and important literary topics that expand our understanding of the world and making meaning within it. I won the Department of English award for producing the best piece of critical writing out of all the people who applied to that scholarship. I can reference influential literary criticism and apply it to literary texts to make arguments about what the literature “does,” and I can show you how to develop these sophisticated argumentative and analytical “reading” skills by asking open-ended questions about the text and sharing my observations and analysis of your thesis or your informal idea of what you want to argue. I love talking about literature, and I know we can have some enjoyable and productive conversations that expand the way you write and think about it.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As the copy editor, I edited every article in the fall 2024 issue of my school’s on-campus, student-led magazine, using my deep knowledge of English to correct errors, all the while making sure to preserve and enhance each individual author’s own unique style and voice. In this role, I was able to come up with creative and fun solutions to writing problems, explain why I made edits to things like grammar and punctuation, and brainstorm with the many creative authors on how to improve their writing to end up with beautiful, fun-to-read articles about current topics and thought-provoking, larger-scale theories about culture. I am savvy in pop culture and knowledgeable about broader, more timeless culture, which helps me understand how to gear writing towards certain audiences (and craft helpful and relevant solutions to your own writing questions!).
