Hi, I'm Jen. I received a Bachelors of Science degree and graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in Human Development and Family Sciences in 2001. For 3 years, I taught High School grades 9-12 English Language Arts and ran an Algebra 1, Geometry, and Math Concepts tutoring lab for both general education & special education students (both resource and general education inclusion classrooms). I also have over 20 years of experience in educational publishing, and have worked for some of the top companies in the industry (Holt McDougal, Pearson, etc.) working as a copyeditor, fact-checker, item writer, Sr. Project Manager, and Product Development Manager.
I decided to moved away from the corporate side of education, and have come back to my true love of teaching children. Since February 2024, I have been an online tutor for both individual students as well as small groups of 3-5 students in their respective classrooms (grades K-8 reading, writing, and math). I have enjoyed the experience so much that I am expanding my availability. As a tutor and former teacher for both General Ed. and Special Ed. students, I know learning can be difficult and frustration at times. I strive to focus on getting to know my student’s individual goals, interests, and learning styles so I can create lessons to engage their curiosity and motivation. I break down concepts and use a variety of techniques (game-based learning, phonics-based decoding strategies, etc.) to keep information accessible and build self-confidence with new material or to reinforce instruction from the classroom (homework help). I am also able to differentiate instruction and modify lessons as needed per my students needs/IEP.
As a mother and former teacher, I have always believed learning should be creative and fun whenever possible. My greatest reward is watching the wonder and excitement light up my students' faces when they discover the power of their own minds. Let's share the adventure and learn together!
