I am a National Board Certified English Teacher with 15 years of experience who holds valid state teaching credentials. Although I taught in brick and mortar schools for most of my career, the last five years have been spent teaching at a virtual charter school and tutoring online. I love working one on one with students virtually because it gives me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world!

I am creative and fun, yet rigorous. My tutoring sessions are lively, yet informative. I like to use games and various forms of educational technology in order to pinpoint where a student's strengths and weaknesses are and then tailor instruction to meet their specific needs.

I am experienced in preparing middle school students for the SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT; high school students for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT; and college students/adults for the ATI TEAS/HESI Nursing School Exam. I use informative PowerPoint slides, practice tests, worksheets, interactive activities, online resources, games, and videos as I work with students to prepare them for all sections of their test. I usually like to assign "homework" so that review and practice can be done between sessions, too.

Need help with writing or editing? That's my specialty! I love helping students improve their writing skills, and I especially enjoy brainstorming and coming up with ideas. I have helped many students craft winning college essays that have gotten them accepted into schools such as NYU and UC-Berkley. I also love helping students with creative writing. I recently encouraged two of my students to enter different poetry contests—and they won!

Please contact me to schedule your first session and create a plan to help you accomplish your goals. I can't wait to meet you!

Common Core,

Common Core

I am very familiar with the secondary English Common Core standards that most schools use. Throughout my experiences teaching in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Nevada I saw that most states follow the Common Core standards under various names—for example, Nevada calls them the “Nevada State Standards,” but they are almost an exact copy of the Common Core.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I am new to Wyzant, but I have worked extensively with students preparing them for various entrance exams with another online company. Although my background is in English, I have a passion for making math accessible to students who sometimes find math challenging. I am familiar with the new Common Core curriculum and I really enjoy working one on one with students online to strengthen their math skills. I also provide free access to several online gamified resources for independent study so that the student can practice on their own between sessions as well.

I am a state certified former middle and high school English teacher with 15 years of experience. I received National Board Certification in 2010. I taught at a virtual charter school for three years, which offers online curriculum to many homeschooled children. I have a full year of English curriculum that can be modified and would be appropriate for a middle or high school student. My lessons cover the skills and standards included in the Common Core Standards for English. I would love to share my curriculum and lessons with you or to help guide you through another program or course. As a student of mine, you will also get free access to various online resources that will provide differentiated lessons that are tailored just for YOU at YOUR level and then progressively get harder as you improve!
Reading,

Reading

I am a state licensed English teacher with National Board Certification in Adolescent and Young Adult English Language Arts. I have 13 years of experience teaching middle and high school English in the classroom and for several of those years I was also hired to write questions for the state End of Course exam where I served as part of the testing panel as well. I help students engage with the text through visualization techniques similar to the Lindamood-Bell method of instruction in which students are encouraged to make mental pictures and imagine what they’re reading and then verbalize what they see. I guide students through annotating the text and help them to become active readers. With the Common Core’s emphasis on state testing, the reading skills and testing strategies I teach help students perform on end of course state exams, school admissions tests, and in their classes. I hope to foster a love of reading!

I have worked with students one on one (throughout my 13 year career as a classroom teacher and online tutor) to help them with study skills including: organization, time management, goal setting and monitoring progress, test taking strategies, diagnosing specific content strengths and weaknesses, figuring out learning styles, memorization techniques like using mnemonic devices, note taking and annotating texts, identifying and capitalizing on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and more!

I am a National Board Certified and state licensed English teacher with 14 years of experience. I have been a full-time testing prep instructor and private tutor for the past year, and I love it! I have helped many students improve their reading/writing scores on various standardized tests. For the ACT, I have developed many lessons on key testing strategies and content skills, and I use a multitude of different practice tests and online resources to help you prepare. I will show you the common grammar rules that are commonly tested and help you to diagnose your strengths and target your weaknesses. Studies show that the best way to improve your score is through exposure and review. In other words, you want to be able to take as many different practice tests as you can, and then have somebody review your answers with you and fill in your knowledge gaps. Let an experienced English teacher show you how to analyze sentence structure and rhetoric—because remember, you have to choose the BEST answer, not necessarily the ONLY answer, and this can often be very misleading to students. For now, it should be clear that even though I’m not the ONLY choice for your tutoring needs, I am the BEST choice! (See what I did there? Haha) I can’t wait to meet you! :)

I am a National Board and State Certified English teacher with 13 years of classroom experience and four years of experience as an online teacher and private tutor. I specialize in test prep and have experience preparing students for the SAT and ACT. Studies show that students benefit most from exposure to practice tests and I have many to share with you! The strategy I have found most useful for students who struggle with reading is an active/close reading strategy where students engage with the text and practice visualizing and then verbalizing what they read. This is similar to the Lindamood-Bell method of instruction for reading and comprehension.

Strong and easy communicator

Robyn is a very good communicator, with 'style' fit for a 13 year old boy. Through three lessons focused primarily on english and comprehension, we have been very satisfied.

Experienced and Extremely Knowledgeable Tutor!

If you are looking for help with the ATI TEAS Robyn is the go to! Not only is she very knowledgeable about all the ins and outs of the test, and it's sections, but she also Is a exemplary teacher. She identifies your strengths and weakness and builds you a completely customized plan with homework, and practice tests, that will enable you to Ace the test! Robyn was crucial in my success on the TEAS and is the best you will find!

great tutor for my middle school daugther

I'd like to recommend Robyn for anyone who is looking to improve their children's writing skills and/or standard test scores, e.g. ISEE. My middle school daughter has been taking weekly lessons since last Sep and she really enjoys it. Robyn also spent several months on my daughter's vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing as part of ISEE preparation. And we couldn't be happier with the test score. Great tutor and highly recommended!

Exceptional SSAT Reading & Verbal Tutor!

Before we connected with Ms. Robyn, my son Gavin was really struggling with the reading and verbal portions of the SSAT. On practice tests, he was ranging between the 40th to 60th percentile. After 10 lessons over a seven-week period, my son scored in the 89th percentile in both verbal and reading with an 89 overall score and now has a great shot at any of the top 20 boarding schools. Ms. Robyn has a great way of connecting with her students and making lessons fun and engaging. My son did not enjoy all of the work he had to do to prepare for the SSAT, but he really looked forward to each lesson with Ms. Robyn. From my standpoint, I really appreciated her scheduling flexibility. We are currently in the Middle East and there is a significant time difference which makes live tutoring a real challenge. Ms. Robyn was always very accommodating. We are looking forward to continuing to work with her as my son prepares for the Upper-Level SSAT next year. Thank you Ms. Robyn!

Robyn has high expectations with compassion and understanding! The critical combo for success!

Robyn is a truly amazing tutor! We highly recommend her! Robyn was warm and friendly from the minute we met her. She made an instant connection with my twin boys and she was able to motivate them both equally. We chose her for SSAT tutoring because the 12-hour time difference from the Middle East was exactly what our schedule required. From the very beginning, Robyn accommodated our crazy schedule. Robyn used innovative online games and various other strategies to keep the twins motivated. She was able to prepare them for the SSAT so thoroughly that both boys scored at a level that got them accepted into their very top choice for a private high school! We liked Robyn so much that we still had her tutor long after the boys nailed their SSAT. We just moved on to preparing the twins for high school math. Robyn did such a awesome job with their high school math preparation that they were able to skip Algebra 1 completely and start in Geometry in 9th grade! The boys love Robyn to much that we just moved into having her prepare them for the PSAT. Robyn is really able to tutor in any subject! We highly recommend Robyn and we know you will love her as much as my boys do!

Great Tutor! Highly Recommend

Robyn is patient, kind and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed working with her and I learned a lot. She really takes the time to explain the concepts, and she is also very encouraging. My orginal goal was to raise my TEAS score. Orginally I scored an overall score of a 50% and today I am excited to anounce I got an overall score of a 72% which is proficient. Only one school I am applying to requires the TEAS test and they want an overal score of a 60%. So I am excited that I met that goal. I higly recommend Robyn as a tutor. Thank you so much Robyn!
