What I love the most about tutoring is helping kids see they are more capable than they think they are academically. The key, for me, is to understand my students at the individual level so I can figure out what truly motivates them. Once the student is properly motivated, learning - and improving - comes far more quickly. I have over twenty years of experience teaching the ACT and SAT and guiding kids through the entire college application process. I generally teach kids in high school and have done so in both individual and group settings, in-person and online.
My teaching career began after I graduated from UC Berkeley, when I taught ESL to adults, who then requested that I tutor their kids for the SAT. Many of these kids were bright and hardworking but needed help with test-taking skills, so I began training them how to be better test takers. When their scores steadily rose, I realized then that teaching was indeed my calling. Ever the perfectionist, I procured as many authentic SATs, PSATs, and ACTs as I could and proceeded to take every one of them, analyzing all the questions using a spreadsheet. As a result, I discovered many patterns and tricks that could immediately improve a student’s score.
I then began training myself in college counseling, including attending a college counseling certificate program at UCLA. Eventually, I began to understand the nuances of elite college competition in higher education and developed tactics over my twenty years of experience that could strengthen a student’s chances, which were highly successful: I have helped over 300 students in my lifetime gain admissions to great colleges, including the Ivy Leagues, the UC's, and top liberal arts colleges. I always set high expectations for my students, motivate and encourage them incessantly, and fulfill my obligations with the utmost integrity. I am respectful, considerate, tactful, cordial - yet firm. I look forward to meeting you, and helping you achieve your goals of academic excellence.
