TEST PREP: Many of my students spend enormous resources with classes, tutors and self-study only to find themselves stuck at the 600/85% level. This happens, especially for the Math section of the exams, because they have practiced and reinforced a brute-force approach which takes too many steps, too much time and forces careless mistakes. I teach my students how to think efficiently and find the elegant solutions. Instead of spending 4 minutes on a problem and getting it wrong, imagine doing it in 30 seconds and getting it right! That's how you get to 780. Many of my students wish they had contacted me first instead of going with a cheaper option. In the end, I may seem expensive but I am actually cost effective because I get results.

After semi-retiring from Wall Street, I have spent the past 5 years establishing myself as one of Manhattan's premier Test Prep Tutors. There are many tutors with Ivy league degrees and top test scores. However, this doesn't mean they excel at teaching others. I have focused my teaching career on how to effectively explain complicated concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. In 1991, I won the teaching award while at Columbia Business School. Quantitative Reasoning: The math portion of the GMAT is not difficult. If you study by yourself, however, or even with an amateur tutor, you are bound to get stuck around 600 level. This is because you are attacking the problems using the long, brute force way you were taught in school. For example, if you ever use the Pythagorean Theorem (a squared plus b squared equals c squared) you are wasting precious time and increasing the probability of making a careless mistake. My students are trained to look for one of the 4 classic right triangles (for example: the three, four, five right triangle) and never brute force the Pythagorean Theorem. Using this approach, they will see the elegant solution in 10-20 seconds and get it right leaving extra time for other problems instead of spending four minutes on a problem and getting it wrong! Most of my students come to me after hours of classes, tutors and self-practice. They tell me they are stuck and can't seem to break through. This is because they need someone who is an expert on the exam to show them three things: 1) the elegant solutions, 2) the mental/psychological traps set by the exam makers and 3) the common mistakes they, in particular, tend to make. Acing this exam is as much about knowing the material as it is about knowing oneself! Before trying to save money with all those classes, go with a tutor who knows what he is doing. Preparing for the PSAT is a really good idea. Most parents wait till the junior year before they start looking for an SAT tutor. I work with many juniors who have busy school and sports schedules. It takes time to improve one's test score and the more time the better. There are huge advantages if a student starts his or her SAT or ACT test prep by preparing for the PSAT in their sophomore year. Given the lighter schedule and the length of time available, I can improve their PSAT scores but more importantly build the foundation upon which they will Ace the SAT and ACT when the time comes.

The SAT Math test requires expert guidance. Sure, your high school junior is smart and gets straight A's. And yet, even if she or he loves math, why is it so hard to get a perfect score- the elusive 800. Without expert guidance, the more you practice the more you lock in a 600-700 score. Why? Because it's not what you know but how you think that gets you to 800. In other words, practicing the long, brute force way to do a math problem not only takes time but also increases the probability of a simple careless mistake. 650 means you know the math. 750-800 means you think efficiently, and know yourself. It's rare to get to 800 on your own. And not all tutors can get you there. Most tutors are paid to watch your child do problems. I teach my students how to think and see the elegant solution. Many of my students come to me after hours of SAT classes, SAT tutors and self-practice and tell me that no matter how hard they practice they can't break above the 700 level. I explain to them that it's not about knowing the math but about knowing how to think. I evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and create a plan to get to 780 or even 800! I have established my self as one of Manhattan's premier test prep tutors. In the last couple years, I have taken many students from 600 or less to 750 or greater. My students have been excepted to Harvard, Stanford, Columbia and other top schools. I have tutored and mentored many students on the SAT and the college application process including the interview.
