Hi my name is Nancy and I would love to be your tutor! I am an energetic, experienced, patient and motivated tutor who enjoys working with students of all ages. I have taught everything from kindergarten to university. I actually have post graduate foreign students in English right now. I lived in Mexico for ten years, I was a bilingual kindergarten teacher in Spanish. I went to a teacher's college to study elementary education. After graduating I studied an additional year in California to qualify for certification there. Since then I have earned a Master's in Education. I also have bilingual certification in Spanish and English. I have also I would be happy to provide references and my resume to anyone who is interested.

My tutoring method is to use the sessions to explain the concepts or structure. I use a motivating games, visual aids and supplementary books. I feel that a tutors main responsibility is to explain and provide ways for students to show their understanding. I always come prepared with examples for my students to practice. I always provide personalized homework that is tailored to the needs of each student to have additional practice whatever we are working on. I honestly feel you are wasting your money if the students don't practice between classes. I hope to hear from you!

First of all I have ADD. I self diagnosed and voluntarily sought treatment. As an elementary teacher since 1976 I recognized the symptoms. I have read four books and many articles on the subject. I have taught many students who have it. I am currently tutoring a boy with ADD. I knew he had it before his mom even told me. I feel a person with it can not only recognize it but intuitively understands how to pace the lesson better than someone who doesn't. Unlike many teachers who disparage students who have it, I actually consider it a gift. We are, on average more intelligent and often have a great sense of humor.
Dyslexia

I graduated with a minor in the teaching of reading. My sister has dyslexia. I have been teaching since 1976. In my almost twenty years as a kindergarten and first grade teacher I've had many students who have had dyslexia and have had to use special strategies to help them read. One of the ways I did this was to use chanting books like "Brown Bear" that were highly repetitive. The students weren't really decoding but they gained enough confidence to slowly make the transition and were eventually able to independently read new words without my help.

I graduated from a teacher's college, Lesley, in Cambridge Mass. I studied an additional year in California to get my licence there. I taught first grade for five years in San Francisco. I taught kindergarten and first grade for six years in Tucson. I taught bilingual first grade in Racine, Wisconsin. I earned a Master's Degree from National Louis University and a bilingual certification from Alverno College. I continue to tutor elementary students and am currently working as a substitute in my former elementary school.

I have been a first grade and kindergarten teacher for over twenty years. I have a degree in elementary education and my minor was the teaching of reading. I have had many workshops and refresher training in my school districts to stay current on the latest methodologies. I still use phonics in my instruction as an ESL teacher.

I recently took a Praxis test and scored 186 points out of 200. My test was to get a K-8 Nevada Teacher's License. The test mostly asked questions about how to assess problems and what strategies would be the most appropriate.

I minored in the teaching of reading. I have been working this year as a middle school reading teacher. I have taught reading in elementary school. Reading is also my favorite leisure activity.
Spanish

I taught kindergarten for seven years exclusively in Spanish. I have taught middle school Spanish here in Las Vegas. I have bilingual certification. I lived in Mexico for ten years and during that time I was hired to translate a book from Spanish to English. I am fluent in speaking and writing.
Study Skills

I taught university level students in Mexico study skills because it was a requirement to get a 530 score on the TOEFL to graduate and many needed the TOEFL to study abroad also. I also taught them strategies for how to study for our mid term and final exams. I am currently teaching ESL to adults and often have to show them what to focus on and how to practice and test themselves before formal assessments.
