I have five years of classroom experience with students from 6th to 12th grade, and ten years of experience teaching exam prep (SAT, ACT, and SAT II), including time at two of the largest exam prep companies in the country. I would love to use that experience to help your student achieve their maximum potential. I hold an MEd in secondary education as well as a BA in Linguistics and Middle Eastern Studies from Rutgers University, and a MA in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies from Columbia University, but I have done extensive coursework in many different areas. Over the course of my education, I have been trained to approach problems from as many different angles as possible. One of the things I love about teaching is the opportunity to share that knowledge and that training with my students, giving them the skills to continue to learn on their own.

I currently teach History at a private school in Las Vegas, though I hold a Teaching License from the State of Massachusetts.

My tutoring specialties include:
Exam Prep (SAT, ACT, SAT II, AP, GRE)
Writing (Particularly advanced essay/paper writing)
History, Politics, Social Studies
Literature
Chemistry
Mathematics - through Algebra II

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past two years, I have worked with elementary students at a tutoring center to improve their understanding not only of the basics of arithmetic, reading, and writing, but also problem solving. Many students struggle with taking the skills they have learned in theory, be they addition and subtraction, spelling, phonics, or grammar, and putting them into use in school and in real-world situations. Many students also have never been taught to translate these skills into a form that will allow them to succeed on standardized tests - which is, of course, the way most school systems test those skills. I can help your student improve those base skills, and take what she knows and use it on tests, in school, and in life.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary math skills form the foundation for all math classes students will take in middle and high school. I can help your student master arithmetic and problem solving skills so that they have a solid base to build their education on.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

For the past two years, I have worked with students of all ages (late elementary school to high school and even college) to improve their study skills. Often, even minor changes in their habits or approaches to schoolwork helps students get more out of their study time. I can help your student understand what their teachers are asking them to do, and how to create and execute plans to work smarter, as well as harder.

English,

English

Many students struggle with English classes because the basics (grammar and spelling, primarily) are not taught as thoroughly as they used to be in classrooms. These skills are still incredibly vital - students cannot learn to write effectively, or to process literature, without mastering them. I have years of experience helping students of all ages grasp the important basics and more advanced skills, including analysis of literature and the art of writing an effective essay.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

SAT Reading is a little bit of a misleading title, as there are no points awarded for actually reading the material! Instead, test-takers earn points for properly analyzing the text they are given. I achieved a perfect 800 score for Reading when I was 16, and began teaching others when I was an undergraduate. With six years, and a lot of intuitive insight, under my belt, I can help your student maximize his or her potential, and get the right start to college applications.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section presents many students with their biggest challenge on test day. Often, this is because (in addition to needing a brush-up on many grammar concepts), test-takers are not sure what the essay portion is expecting of them. I can help your students master the formula for an effective essay on the SAT - which will, in fact, give them the basic formula for effective writing for the rest of their academic careers.
Writing,

Writing

I have been helping students, from middle school through college, improve their writing skills for almost ten years. I do not only provide help with grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure; I am particularly effective at helping students master the structure and format of the persuasive academic essay. This structure will be used for almost everything a student writes, from seventh grade book reports, to the SAT essay, on through a Masters dissertation. Writing skills are cumulative, and it is never too early for your student to start perfecting his.

Biology,

Biology

I find that many students struggle with biology because it seems to be just a set of disjointed facts for them to memorize. I can help your student improve their study skills to make learning those facts easier, and also put biology concepts into context, both with other subjects, and with the real world.

Great Instructor.

Ashley is helping me boost my score on the SAT and ACT. She is very enjoyable and knowledgeable to work with. I plan on doing more lessons with her. She lives close to me and the commute is minimal.

Bione, 4 lessons with Ashley

Knowledgeable.

Ashley explained in detail what to expect and gave me homework assignments. We meet again on Wednesday to further my tutoring. It's nice to sit face to face and learn from someone who knows the subject areas and Ashley is very friendly too.

Excellent Tutor

Ashley worked with my daughter on Chemistry. She was patient and knowledgeable. Ashley went over the concepts my daughter was struggling with and explained them to her in a way she could understand them. She was able to complete her homework and now understands the concepts.

Ashley is great

My son really enjoyed working with Ashley this morning. I'm looking forward to more lessons in the future. She communicates well and is giving him strategies based on his abilities.

Nick, 2 lessons with Ashley

Knowledgeable and patient

She was an excellent tutor. She gave great explanations that helped me to understand a specific part of history and also how to answer each question on the practice AP World test. She was also enthusiastic, knowledgeable and patient.

Immanuel, 3 lessons with Ashley

Patient

My child is working with Ashley on Algebra 1 and he has already gained confidence and his grades have increased on his two recent quizzes. He enjoys his sssions and I️ would recommend Ashley to everyone

Very Grateful To Ashley

My daughter was struggling with Chemistry Honors all year. She met with Ashley for a 2 hour review session before her final, and said she learned more from her in 2 hours than she did from her teacher all year. She was VERY patient and knowledgeable. Explained things in a different way so that my daughter was able to grasp it and made her more confident for her test. Thank you so much Ashley!!

Keri, 1 lesson with Ashley

Efficiently thorough and patient!

Having to learn algebra from the beginning again can be stressful. Ashley makes it interesting to learn and is helping familiarize me with the concepts session by session. Her approach and teaching style is well appreciated.

Tisha, 4 lessons with Ashley

Knowledgable

Ashley reviewed very important study skill strategies. She wrote out two full pages of strategies and reminders that were relevant specifically to my son as a learner.
